On occasion I find myself wondering what the other side thinks of an issue. Unfortunately, I have no idea where to go to find an informative dissenting opinion. Any left wing writers out there that whose opinion you respect even though you completely disagree with them?

No.

Mollie Hemingway, Ed.

Great question. I enjoy Chris Hayes of The Nation. Really. He's very honest about where he's coming from, never questions others' motivations (my pet peeve), and engages arguments from the right. He even makes the Rachel Maddow show interesting when he guest hosts.

Why, Mickey Kaus, of course.

Mr. Yeti beat me out.

That being said, its a great question.  Who is the Left's Victor Davis Hanson or Charles Krauthammer?   I haven't a clue.  Nor would I imagine Mickey would put himself in that particular category.

Although I frequently disagree with him, Neil Steinberg of the Chicago Sun Times is not a knee-jerk liberal

I wish Pat Caddell had a blog.

I haven't watched FOX in many months, but Kirsten Powers and Mort Kondracke often make reasonable arguments for the Left. I imagine that's why many liberals think of them as traitors.

Robert Reich occasionally makes an argument worth hearing on The Kudlow Report.

But seriously folks... I'm sure I will get shouted down for this, but Ezra Klein is honest, mostly non-polemical and, though he knows it too well, very smart.

Juan Williams, he still has much the same compass he started with, which is why he is at odds with the calcified lefty power brokers of his own generation.

Christopher Hitchens, though I agree with his estimate of religion, so I hardly "completely disagree" with him.

I agree.  You do indeed deserve to be shouted down.

Megan McCardle  at The Atlantic would be my  choice,   Owing to  her fairly strong  libertarian streak,  she does not wear the  Leftist blinders. Mickey Kaus would come in second.

Smart, sure. Non-polemical? We are talking about the man who said Lieberman was killing people because he opposed health care? The guy who said Obama was "not the Word made flesh, but the triumph of word over flesh, over color, over despair."

But more than that, I've just never learned anything from him.

I know you specifically asked about writers, but I really enjoy the Diane Rehm Show on NPR (usually listen to the podcasts). She does consider herself fair and balanced, which can be infuriating. But she really is a very good talk-show host: she chooses interesting, timely topics; her guests are (mostly) well-spoken experts; she is great at handling off-topic callers and wackos; and even if the conservative right is rarely (adequately) represented, she does provide a range of perspectives from slightly right-of-center to left. I find that Rehm's show is oppo-research time well spent.

No, you can't pick Kirsten Powers.  And Pat Caddell?  The only man both Chuck Norris and Bruce Campbell fear?

You luckily evaded being smacked upside the head by citing actual liberals, but man, my swattin hand was itchy there for a sec.

He's not really an opinion guy as much as he is a straight reporter, but Jake Tapper is my favorite. He has known liberal sympathies, yet somehow manages to keep them totally divorced from his reporting.

Michael Tomasky of the Guardian - He's a complete leftist but I read him to have the complete set of leftist orthodoxy talking points on current issues. I should be able to read Ezra Klein for this but even when reading him, the whiny voice rings in my ears.

Bob Herbert of the NYTimes - Mostly full of it, but on occasion he has points that the conservative elite might pay attention to.

Ruben Navarrette - In the spectrum of non-conservative columnists, he's the sanest voice on illegal immigration. Same comment re conservative elite.

Triple echo here: Megan; Mickey; Christopher.

Though I too have to qualify that I often don't disagree with these three. Or rather, they often sensibly agree with me.

Does Camille Paglia count?  When she's not writing about Gaga's HooHa, or Madonna's Bras, I like reading her.

Kaus, Hitch, and Paglia are about the only ones I can think of at the moment.
