Have you all seen this yet? I guess the entire American commentariat has already had a go at this, but I'm really shocked. Just who does this guy think he is, talking to the people he's supposed to be serving like that?

You don't know, Claire? He thinks he's Pete Stark.

That guy was my representative in Alexandria the 12 years I was there... He is just like any other un-seatable incumbent: lazy, drunken, belligerent, and entitled. Oh, and a first class "talking points" liberal.

He's a hothead. He once accused an eight year old boy of brandishing a weapon and trying to steal his car, if I remember correctly, about 10 years ago.

Truly rude to interrupt until the politician had not finished spewing bunk, made him lose his place...How sad.

Seems you missed one on a Town Hall meeting in Fullerton, Ca. from last year.  The Elected Rep. asked the fellow posing a question if he was a Minuteman Member and had he shot anyone today. Then the Rep. stated he would rather have a dog pee on his leg than answer the questions....And by the way... the simple questions asked were nowhere near the scale in the video....

The lack of civility and respect to voters has been about for some time....

We don't need meetings with our politicians in which we ask questions and then have to meekly accept their responses as the final word. What we need are Ricochet-style forums with our politicians in which we speak, they speak, and then we have a chance to speak again. What's the point of meeting face-to-face if all we can expect are the same canned responses available on their campaign websites?

 Welcome home from Turkey, Claire.

I once spoke with my representative's (a Republican) office in D.C., asking where and when he would be meeting with constituents during the upcoming break.

The response I got from his office was, (I swear), "He's going to be going home during this break".  Home, as the staffer explained to me, was his home in northern Virginia, not his home in his congressional district in Florida.

I suspect any question that's not fawning, friendly, or can be answered by blaming the Republicans qualifies as "rhetorical" in Moran's book, and hence beneath contempt.

As for who Jim Moran thinks he is: he thinks he's Jim Moran. Apparently that doesn't mean anything to do. Sit down.

What disturbs me about this video is that the audience reaction is very different from the Tea Party heyday of 2009 and 2010.   Those were raucous events, where the crowd was holding politicians' feet to the fire.  Here, they're silent, other than telling the citizen to sit down.

Granted, the guy was too long-winded, but one would have expected him to get more support and Moran to get more grief.

I actually met that sorry excuse for a human being about nineteen years ago.  And he was just as much of a horse's ass then as he is on this video.

It's moments like these that infuse new energy into the Tea Party folks. I think this may have an extended life across Tea Party websites and if similar incidents start to surface then the run up to 2012 is going to look very interesting. Rather than the Tea Partiers fading away, 2012 could be another rout. Not wise to show disrespect to a disabled vet who just wants a straight answer about whether the military is or is not going to get paid.

Moran called his comment "caustic". What?!?!  I wish we had the kind of Parliamentary debates they have in England, where the PM has to stand and face a truly "caustic" group of questioners. Moran is pathetic. We've drifted very far from our rigorous beginnings.

Well, at least he's consistent, right?

Something else to consider here which is not talked about, but that has very real  consequences. My wife's Army Reserve training was cancelled this weekend because of the shut down. In addition to not getting paid, these individuals are denied the valuable training time in order to be on top of their game when sent into harms way. Her unit has been tasked to send troops to support missions (missions that people like Moran send them on) to Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, S. Korea, and El Salvador. Furthermore, it takes people to move equipment, but it doesn't get moved if there's no one to do it. Will they be adequately equipped and prepared?  With politicians like Moran, who knows?

Now this may be out of school, yet somedays makes one wonder ...

What if the elected insult and villify the audience to the point where they storm the podium and pummel the elected to the ground ?

May that not then change the tone ?

Have these folk become so insular that the feel there are no consequences?

Thankfully, we happen to be far more civil than that, just a mental note..

I also was disappointed that the crowd didn't appear to be supportive of the questioner. The comments "sit down" were disturbing. I know this is northern Va, but still, where are the Tea Partiers?!!!!!!

Jim Moran is a contemptible clown of the first order, and his representation of Virginia in Congress is an embarrassment to his district, Virginia, and the country. I have had the pleasure of voting against him in the past, and expect video like this to help retire his sorry butt despite his safe district.

I don't know how this one was arranged, but I cannot imagine Jim Moran doing a real town hall even before the 2010 election.

Hot Air makes the point that the House went into recess having passed not one, but two bills to preempt the shutdown, and it is the Democrat leadership in the Senate that has been unable to exemplify an interest in the topic. And, of course, the President is on record, contemptuously dismissing the paying of servicemen is a distraction.

As for the Tea Party, I find no call to action for this town hall in my email, so either I am not on the right list or this was one of the new style, invitation only, post Tea Party style town hall for the Congress critter's staff, top donors, and public employee union members.

Jim Moran is a notorious bully as others have pointed out.  He's bad enough that the WaPo long ago gave up on him and refused to endorse him.  (I assume they still refuse, though I don't live there anymore.)  Anyway, he's in an impenetrable D district, which is why nobody in the audience took up for the disabled veteran and why Moran's long-ago tired act continues in perpetuity.

Indeed, Moran is the embodiment of Oscar Wilde's observation that "a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds."

Not to put too fine a point on it, we are casting Moran as the hobgoblin?
