I've tried to manage my anxiety about tomorrow by exercising, working, reading the Psalms, and obsessively refreshing Ricochet and Powerline, but it doesn't appear to be working. Instead, I've decided to imagine the composition of President Romney's cabinet. Here are my starter ideas:

  • Attorney General: Artur Davis (honesty about voter ID laws and affirmative action)
  • State Department: certain to be Rob Portman
  • Education: "Neutron" Gingrich
  • HHS: Pawlenty or Santorum (okay, maybe a stretch, but a Catholic guy can dream)
  • Homeland: Thune or Barbour
  • Defense: Rumsfeld (just to cause a collective aneurism on the East Coast)

What say you?

Forgive me if I hark back to my post on a similar topic a few weeks ago -- how far we have come! -- when I was being light hearted. My call for "Democrat head explosions" as a criterion for selection Cabinet members was not entirely a joke. They are going to have the vapors anyway, so let's give them something to have the vapors ABOUT.

Portman can have whatever he wants.  He knows Washington and he's been the ultimate team player.  But I'd love to see John Bolton at State, an appointment that will induce multiple head explosions.

The Artur Davis pick is an interesting one, but I'd love to see Rudi Guiliani as AG.  I don't agree with all his views, but he was a real prosecutor and he's strong on national security.

Pawlenty will get something as well.

How about Ray Kelly, NYPD Police Commish for Homeland Security. He keeps quiet about politics and always gets the job done.

And let's do away with the Education Department, Commerce Department, all affirmative action offices, and, well, what's your idea?

How about Romney eliminate some cabinet positions like homeland security, that's what the defense dept is there for. I like Giuliani for attorney general. Although it would be nice to see him as mayor of NYC after this storm debacle.

Santorum for Education.  Appoint a homeschool dad to lead the big education bureaucracy.

Pawlenty should be put in charge of something where making red meat statements matters very little and results matter very much. He's not a good rhetoric guy, but he's good at delivering results.

DOEducation and DHS - leave those positions unfilled and petition Congress to end both of those miserable failures.

Jindal at HHS.

Giuliani as AG or at Homeland Security.

Bolton at the UN again, because the man was placed on this earth to torment those people.

Jeb for Ed Sec.

Pawlenty's got to be somewhere, since he's been such a loyal soldier.

Portman's already got a job. We need him as an OH senator for at least 3 terms.

John Bolton for State (that's a real mustache, Mr. Axelrod);

Condi Rice for UN Ambassador;

Rob Portman gets whatever he wants;

Sarah Palin for Interior;

Barack Obama for Ambassador to the Federated States of Micronesia: great weather, great scuba, I'm sure there's a golf course somewhere...ahh, bipartisanship.

Bonus points for anyone that got the "West Wing" reference in the last comment...

Seems to me that a guy like Kelly is what we need to keep at the local level, where the real work is done.

Peter Schiff for Treasury secretary. While I think that Thomas Sowell would be an excellent pick (perhaps better)  I think that Peter would listen to Sowell, and act appropriately. Besides if there was a government shutdown, the treasury secretary would determine who gets paid. Thus someone that would happily downsize 70% of the gov't if given the chance would do so with fanaticism. That's the type of person that Peter Schiff is.

If it isn't too obvious to point out, John Taylor of Stanford should, nay must be the man for Sec. of the Treasury.

Dream on, boys and girls. Even IF Mitt's the man on Tuesday there is still Harry Reid and a Democratic Senate to contend with.

Bolton or John Negroponte will go to State. Roy Blunt or Mitch Daniels to HHS.
