Many media outlets are reporting that "Queen of Pop" Whitney Houston, the most awarded female artist of all time, was found dead today at the Beverly Hills Hilton. She was only 48.

What's striking is how slow this wreck occurred. Her drug use had ravaged her body and voice for years. For those of us who have addicts in our families, the slow pace of their destruction is an added pain.

She was Dionne Warwick's niece and Aretha Franklin's godchild. Whitney leaves behind a mother and daughter among many others who mourn the loss.

Interesting how I get my news from Ricochet and Facebook instead of turning on a TV.

But of course -- I was just trying to type it quickly and mis-wrote! Fixed.

And I added the Star Spangled Banner YouTube in there, too. Thank you Ningrim and Jimmy Carter.

Here's her isolated vocal track on "How Will I Know?"  What a voice.

As I watched the video, I was amazed by the joy and abandon with which she sang it. What a delight! What a tragedy that she lost it all.

Mollie,

When Clinton said, "It's the economy stupid."  I said, "It's not the economy stupid, it's the lack of morality you hamburger eating moron!!!"

As with Michael Jackson, Whitney had all the money and power in the world.  Both were twisted by the amoral culture of which they were a large part and profited from.

They both died of an amorality overdose.

Jim

Tragic, yes for sure, unexpected, not even close. Honestly I'm surprised that she made it this far, that is not wishing ill things upon her, just with the lifestyle choices she made, the people she associated with, I think that if she was just a normal person, one who did not have wealth, she would not have seen 38 years of age. This tragedy is played out countless times a day in our society to regular people, who do not make the news. Whitney is just this awful daily event writ large.

She will be missed by fans and I'm sure by true friends and family that loved her, but in many ways, the singer in the video you have posted, with that amazing voice has been gone for some time now.

Godspeed.

Makes you wonder how many lesser profile talents we lose to the drug/alcohol/self-indulgence culture we surround ourselves with.

Slightly off-topic: That is one incredible performance. I wonder if part of the reason it is great is because it is performed with live accompaniment. It's carefully planned from beginning to end, and she absolutely nails it, as does the orchestra. So much of the garbage that passes for national-anthem-singing today has the singer essentially showboating. Here, Ms. Houston's tour-de-force is kept in bounds by the need to work with other musicians. I think there's a lesson here for future planners of major sporting events.

Not only does She "nail" it, but the timing was "nailed" as well.

After the September 11, 2001 attacks, Arista Records re-released Houston's "The Star Spangled Banner". She once again donated her share of the royalties, as did Arista Records, towards the firefighters and victims of the terrorist attacks. This time the single peaked at #6 on the US Hot 100, and was certified platinum by the RIAA. It also surprisingly peaked at #5 on the Canadian Singles Chart. This now made Houston the first musical act to take the national anthem Top 10 in the US, and have it certified platinum. In 2001, the song reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100, which is, thus far, Houston's last Top 10 entry on the chart.
