Whit Stillman, the Conservative Woody Allen, Or, In Which I Struggle to Rehabilitate Myself
Having humiliated myself below, I hereby attempt to prove that I am, sort of, mildly, hip--no matter how many posters EJ Hill may devise portraying me as hopeless (see comment #10).
To wit:
My pal, Ricochet member Ed Driscoll, just put up a fascinating interview with movie director Whit Stillman, a conservative, believe it or not, whose new film, Damsels in Distress, looks simply splendid. Stillman, as I know, because I am, as I say, pretty hip, is the director of the superb indie hits of the Nineties, Metropolitan, Barcelona, and The Last Days of Disco.

Hipster Pete... (from his Reagan White House Days....)

I surrender.

Sorry Peter. It's the old baseball player in me. If you're going to groove it down the middle of the plate I can't help taking a cut....
And if you ask any of my teenaged children they will tell you that no one can be more unhip than their father.

Peter, you've made coolness irrelevant with your charm, wit, intelligence, and congenial nature, which is its own sort of coolness that most us can only hope to feebly imitate.

Sincerely square, it is the new cool. Don't change a thing Peter

I'm afraid that by using the phrase "to wit" unironically you have permanently forfeited any claims to being hip.
Wear it as a badge of honor.

So THAT's why I like Whit Stillman movies!

King Prawn, GDLIII, and Charlotte, you're my best friends, for life. EJ, on the other hand....

Well, I'm so unhip I originally read that headline as saying something about "Slim Whitman." I will now slouch in the corner and mumble my penance for hurting Peter's feelings. (And remember, my avatar is a dead crooner!)

I've never heard of him or his movies. Therefore, he must not be cool.

Yes, Metropolitan especially is a great movie. Such strange, brilliant dialog. Most unforgettable line: "She's a composite!"

Linking to an interview with jumped-the-shark Kenny G-like saxophone calls into question whether you get it, but I'll give you a pass. This time ;-)

Personally, I prefer Last Days of Disco, but Metropolitan is also fun.
I haven't actually seen Barcelona ... yet.

Those of you who are not already subscribers may not know about Ken Myers' great Mars Hill Audio Journal. Myers interviewed Mark Henrie, editor of the anthology, Doomed Bourgeois in Love: Essays on the Films of Whit Stillman. The interview appears on Volume 54.

I think The King Prawn summed Peter up best. Love graphics EJ.

Whit Stillman today would be considered a David Brooks/William Buckley RINO.

William F. Buckley's considered a RINO?! Really?

That Photoshop is hilarious!
But Peter, you proved beyond a shadow of a doubt your "unhipness" by mispronouncing Bono's name on Uncommon Knowledge. It's Bono, like bon mot. Not like Sonny & Cher. (Don't remember the episode, but the subject was third world debt relief.)
Nevertheless, we all love and adore you in all your dorkiness. Keep it up!
