Where You're From, Part I
Good news! Monaco, Papua New Guinea and French Guyana have risen into the ranks of the places that send us visitors (recall this discussion from December), although Turkmenistan, North Korea, and Mali remain stubborn hold-outs.
But what about within the U.S.? When we sort the states by the visitors they send us, it's no surprise: the biggest states rank at the top:
States That Send Ricochet the Most Visitors
- California
- New York
- Texas
- Illinois
- Virginia
- Florida
- Pennsylvania
- Ohio
- Washington
- Colorado
- Minnesota
- Georgia
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
- North Carolina
- New Jersey
- Maryland
- District of Columbia
- Arizona
- Missouri
But if you adjust the ranking according to population, things start to get more interesting:
States That Send Ricochet the Most Visitors, Per Capita
- District of Columbia
- Virginia
- Colorado
- Minnesota
- North Dakota
- Washington
- Oregon
- Maryland
- Massachusetts
- New York
- Connecticut
- Illinois
- California
- Utah
- New Hampshire
- Missouri
- South Dakota
- Vermont
- Arizona
- Alaska
D.C. sends us far and away the most visitors per capita, and it's only because of the D.C. suburbs that Virginia ranks #2. If you proceed through the rest of top 13, only North Dakota leans conservative. Not exactly the centers of rock-ribbed, red meat conservatism you might expect.
That led us to take a more detailed look into the data. The Logo will discuss our findings later this weekend.

Re: Where You're From, Part I
Colorado has lots of conservatives and registered Republicans but they were disenfranchised by the Colorado Supreme Court which unconstitutionally gerrymandered the state for Democrats ten years ago. That process is now ongoing again and it remains to be seen whether the court will once again take over a function left solely to the General Assembly by the Colorado Constitution and finally put Republicans into permanent minority status.
Unfortunately the voters of Colorado missed an opportunity to change the Supreme Court last November when four of the Justices were up for retention. All were retained*. The issue voters are always the least informed on is what their judges are doing to them.
Colorado also has a gang of four uber billionaires committed to spending their fortunes on defeating Republicans. In the rest of the country Democrats have George Soros. In Colorado they have four clones of him.
*[the former chief justice had been the chief architect of the gerrymandering 10 years ago and retired before the election]

Re: Where You're From, Part I
About 20 years ago there was an often-seen bumper sticker that said, “Don’t Californiacate Colorado!” Nobody knew then how prophetic it was.

well, Kansas may not have ranked in the top 20 but I will still represent the great heartland conservative values here on Ricochet as best I can!!

I can't tell you about Members (our location data on Members is spotty -- it's only what people self-report). But we did have 60 unique visitors from Estonia during the comparable period. (FWIW, we work with a very fine contract developer in Tallinn.) · May 7 at 8:20am
Assuming you mean web developer, would you mind sending me their contact info (the email address associated with my account will do it)? I'm a web designer/developer myself and am trying to make some contacts here. Thanks!

Hi from London everyone. I am not surprised to see my home Connecticut so far down the list. Next week I'll be checking from Uzbekistan. Logo, I wonder how many hits Ricochet has gotten from Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

We're not exactly chewing it up in the 'stans. In terms of unique visitors (hits will be higher):
Kazakhstan: 15
Uzbekistan: 4

Re: Where You're From, Part I
Love this! And it's so true. Northern Virginia is, in many ways, the North. (I'm a native NoVA'n.) The rest of the state is, by and large, the South. I went to college in Williamsburg, in Tidewater VA--a prestigious school that is, sadly, hardly a bastion of conservatism anymore--and one of my history professors, a native VA Piedmonter, *still* referred to the Civil War as the War of Northern Aggression. (And drank bourbon in his coffee during class. But that's another thread....)
NoVA is "Metro DC," in every sense of that expression. · May 7 at 7:55am

As a Virginian (who goes to that same College, I suspect), I've come to refer to Manassas and points north as the "Bolivarian Socialist People's Republic of Northern Virginia"

And we'll soon replace California as no. 13--just as soon as five more California Ricocheteers move to Utah.

I had a similar experience in high school. Science teacher, native of North Carolina, called it the War of Northern Aggression. I had assumed it was a southern quirk of his to make us uncomfortable but now realize it may be a more pervasive term. But then this always made me chuckle in rebuttal to his "The South will rise again."
As for the demographics, do multiple visits by the same user throw off the counts? Because I know I'm addicted and may personally skew one blue state's numbers depending on the total values we're discussing.

Born and raised in NoVA myself... After ten years in liberal Alexandria after college, I said screw it and jumped head long into the fire... Downtown DC. This is the only place I've lived where a vegan will scoff at you for ordering a steak in a steakhouse!

DC and Maryland are far, far worse. Cross a bridge, and your chances of having your car stolen drop 8-12 fold. And there is even a Republican representing a district in the Beltway zone, Frank Wolf. And Virginia is very, very red just now otherwise.

This is very cool. Was there a list of countries' hits that I missed? I'd love to see one (also . .. though this is work-intensive) population adjusted like the states' list.

Perhaps center-right and centrist Democrats are rethinking their alliance to the party of Nanci Pelosi and Barack Obama.
