What's Your Favorite Clint Eastwood Movie?
Since he may just be the mystery speaker at the RNC Convention right here in my city of Tampa, there couldn't be a better time to find out what everyone's favorite Clint film is. Doesn't matter if he acted in it or just directed it.
I'm a big fan of his so it's tough for me to pick. I love the Dirty Harry movies. His spaghetti-Westerns. Enjoyed Firefox, The Unforgiven (although it's a bit overrated), In the Line of Fire, Where Eagles Dare, Gran Torino, etc. But I'm gonna have to go with Kelly's Heroes--it's a movie I can watch anytime, anywhere. Your choice?

Re: What's Your Favorite Clint Eastwood Movie?
Outlaw Josie Wales has the best lines, but if I had to pick the actual best films it would be a toss up between Unforgiven and Gran Torino. I disagree the former is overrated, though I get why many Clint fans don't like it as well as his earlier westerns. But this is because its an American myth-story that happens to be set as a western, rather than a western in and of itself. Both films are astonishingly profound allegories and meditations on the America character and experience. You see and are struck by something different, every time you watch them.

My personal favorite Clint movie with him acting is Absolute Power.
Favorite movie he directed is Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Sure, I'll tell you as soon as you tell me which of your kids you love the most. Kelly's Heroes is a fun one though and Eastwood isn't the only one to shine in that. I saw it when it came out and I didn't know who Donald Sutherland was at the time. I did after that. Rickles was Rickles, which means good and Savalas was no slouch.

Magnum Force will always be at the top of my list. Because of its "R" rating, my Date had to be my guardian and pay for the tickets as I was 16 and she was 17. We still laugh about that until this day.

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. It's so well regarded and accepted as a classic that it is easy to forget how crazy the movie actually is.
I think A Perfect World is probably his best film. Really heartbreaking and wonderfully made. Unforgiven is amazing as well. But it's The Good, The Bad and the Ugly that I can watch in almost any mood.

It's hard to pick just one, but Pale Rider is at the top of my list. Magnum Force is my favorite of the Dirty Harry films. I love the scene where Harry plays the role of an airline pilot to thwart a hijacking.

I'll be contrarian and go with The Eiger Sanction. It was Clint saying, I can do James Bond without being hokey.

High Plains Drifter. The story is such a classic morality tale. Sometime's I think The Drifter was supernatural, maybe The Angel of Death (or another angel) come to visist retribution. Sometimes I think The Drifter was from the murdered sheriffs family (in the whipping scene the guy looks a lot like Eastwood, maybe his stunt-double) or even the dead sherriff come back. I also toy with the idea that he is the same man as The Preacher from Pale Rider (5th best movie). Either way I love that movie.

Great picks and explanations so far!!! I'm wondering if anyone is going to mention Paint Your Wagon (not "technically" an Eastwood film but he does sing in it) or Play Misty for Me. And what . . . no one picked Any Which Way But Loose yet?

Re: What's Your Favorite Clint Eastwood Movie?
"The Drifter" from High Plains Drifter was the same guy as "The Preacher" from Pale Rider? That's a great idea. Pale Rider strikes me as an obvious homage to the 1953 Alan Ladd film Shane with "The Preacher" character being a combination of Shane and the protagonist from High Plains Drifter.
Re: What's Your Favorite Clint Eastwood Movie?
I know my least favorite one -- the trite, emotionally manipulative, "killing disabled people is loving!" one featuring Hilary Swank. Million Dollar Baby. Ugh.

Re: What's Your Favorite Clint Eastwood Movie?
I'm reading that Clint Eastwood is headed to Tampa, so he very well might be the mystery speaker.
I must confess I haven't seen a lot of his older movies due to me being born in the 80s and the fact that I just don't watch many movies. So I don't have a favorite Clint Eastwood movie.

Outlaw Josie Wales
You boys gonna draw them heaters, or you gonna just stand there whislin' Dixie
And that negotiation with the Indian Chief ... when two people of near or equal strength and resolve resolve to negotiate a treaty, it will be a good treaty - so long as those two are there to uphold it.

Re: What's Your Favorite Clint Eastwood Movie?
I'll second Cornelius Julius Sebastian: Unforgiven is a superb film and it's brilliance lies in it's simultaneously being both the perfect Western and the perfect Anti-Western.

Re: What's Your Favorite Clint Eastwood Movie?
Where Eagles Dare....by far the best.

Re: What's Your Favorite Clint Eastwood Movie?
The Outlaw Josie Wales , despite it being based on a novel written by a New Age Native American-wannabe racist. I mean, come on - how many times have you wanted to squint/sneer into the face of an adversary and calmly say, "Dyin' ain't much of a livin'"?

OK. But I'll stick with those he was the primary star of.

Re: What's Your Favorite Clint Eastwood Movie?
Love, love, love--how many times can I say it?--Where Eagles Dare
One of the last great pre-Spielberg action/adventure movies. No over-the-top special effects--just great action, with an Agatha Christie dinner-table mystery plopped right in the middle of the movie. But then, I do have a weakness for 1960s men-on-a-mission movies.

It does have an appropriate line: "Right turn, Clyde!"

Re: What's Your Favorite Clint Eastwood Movie?
Both are westerns: High Plains Drifter and Pale Rider.
