Today I was so preoccupied with reflecting upon Margaret Thatcher's legacy that for the first time in quite some time, I didn't check the news at all. In fact, I lost track of time.

It's a nice feeling, actually. Tell me, should I check? Do I have to? Is there anything I urgently need to know?

As the old joke goes, Missiles launches detected from Soviet soil, America responds. News at 11. You're on the right track. Relax.

Claire Berlinski, Ed.

I felt it was my obligation as a professional editor of Ricochet at least to have a look at the news. There did not seem to be any immediate reason to duck and cover, so after five minutes I decided I'd done my job.

Not depressed by the link, but by the atrocious editing - terrible. Loved the second comment there, especially,

"I have been trying to debate with my friends the pain capitalism has brouht (sic) onto us as humans, but as you might well know its quite difficult to debate against capitalists. The perspective with which you've written your article enriches my debate."

You know what makes me sad - They do! I think the 100 million dead due to the quest to achieve socialist nirvana or the additional 100 million from the environmental movement (the DDT ban alone) gives the good Prof far more to answer for than worrying about whether or not Johannesburg has enough water.

The successors to Journ-o-List have settled on a meme: Governor Perry is dumb and pays too much money for rent. Next up: he keeps a Confederate flag in his top dresser drawer.

I learned from Ricochet members about this Solyndra business. It sounds so Third-World.

Didn't the Israeli ambassador just get kicked out of Turkey? Not the day to take a break from the news, Claire.

Hmm:

  • Corruption riots in India (well, anti-corruption, presumably);
  • China declares the entire South China Sea to be its territory, because they respect copyrights;
  • You know the Turkey stuff;
  • Hugo Chavez goes in for more chemotherapy, rather than much-needed aromatherapy;
  • Europe continues its march of folly, by using the words "must" and "needs" a lot;
  • 0-bama will call a Joint Session of Congress in not-prime-time to not announce a jobs plan, but hint at one he may reveal over the coming months;
  • In addition to college football, there are rumors of some league for retired college football players.  Ludicrous of course, retired college football players mostly sell cars;
  • Lauren Sivan has moved to LA, igniting an East Coast-West Coast Red Eye Leg Chair gang war.  Also igniting a newsvan from rival local NBC affiliate, though such rumors are unconfirmed;
  • Hot Girl in Bikini from this week's Burn Notice turned out not to be Denise Richards, as widely claimed (by me), but Charisma Carpenter of Buffy fame.
  • I should never have noted that Lauren Sivan moved to LA in a forum Rob was likely to read.

And that's the way it is.

That was yesterday's news, and frankly, it's not huge news by the standards of this region.

Takes me back a few decades to The Kingston Trio:

They're rioting in Africa, they're starving in Spain.
There's hurricanes in Florida, and Texas needs rain.
The whole world is festering with unhappy souls....

I'm really enjoying your book on Thatcher.  We could use someone of her caliber.  All countries could.

Belarus is one that needs some monetarism, right now.

Well, that article is just another in the endless stream of "my life is terrible and it's all someone else's fault". But I took heart in this article (from the NYT! from Steven Pinker!) acknowledging that there even is such a thing as self control.Perhaps just a baby step, perhaps the start of something more important? Could even more awkward notions - like individual responsibility and self-reliance - be just over over the New York horizon?

(Ok, it's from yesterday, but time moves slowly up here, and the only time the NYT is worth reading is when it's already been filtered - in this case by Arts and Letters Daily)

Claire, I'm just curious: Is there any particular reason you were reflecting on Thatcher today? I adore the woman. BTW I read your book twice (so far).

Surprised no one mentioned that the Turkey navy to escort aid ships to Palestinians in Gaza

Certainly not good news.

That was March's saber rattling. When they follow through the Turks will be revealed to a coming American administration, and certainly the American people, as an unrepentant terror monger. Should Turkey leave NATO, or the United States?
