Last night, John King asked Romney about his tax records:

First off, I loathe the question. What option does Romney have to go against his father without coming off as disrespectful? Also, I can't imagine caring less about tax records than I do right now. And I consider Romney's extreme wealth to be a feature, not a bug of his candidacy.

But why is he handling this so poorly? He's already said he'll release the records, but why does he stammer and hem and haw when answering questions about them?

That's an earnest question. I'm curious what you think is the reasoning.

Earlier this week when ABC News ran a hit piece -- and I'm not joking -- about how good of a tither Mitt Romney is to his church, I wondered if maybe his large contributions to charity were going to be a problem.

Now I'm wondering if the problem is that he really is just obscenely wealthy and he doesn't want to deal with all the questions that arise from revealing that. He's trying to shake a Thurston Howell, III, image and if he's even wealthier than we think, he's worried it will hurt him. Any other thoughts? Is Pseudodionysius right about Jimmy Hoffa being buried in them?

A Thurston Howell III reference!   No one can top that!

I'm with you.  As a capitalist, I honor the guys who do it really well.  There should be baseball trading cards for rich guys so kids can want to grow up to be just like them.

It could be as simple as showing how much against his self interest he must act in order to flatten, broaden, and simplify the tax system. I'd be willing to bet he doesn't take the standard deduction.

You've violated copyright Mollie. I made that joke during a live chat - I'm sure of it. And Jim the Hammer Shapiro is coming to get you. The deposition will be a 3 hour tour, a 3 hour tour.

Love that idea, Tommy!

Mollie, I think it may be as simple as Mitt being very wealthy and feeling somewhat uncomfortable with it. Particularly as a first-generation "rich guy." Also, while I don't exactly know what the Mormon view would be on the subject, as a Christian I wouldn't feel right essentially "bragging" about my wealth -- should wealth ever befall me.

By the way, somehow I missed the booing last night. Romney was booed for his answer? Really? I mean, it was a weak response, but booing? That is not a good sign -- not at all. My prediction of Romney coming in third in SC may come to pass.

A friend who was there messaged me at the time of the booing that the hecklers were saying "Move on!" As such, I think they may have been booing the premise of the question, etc. So hard to know from television.

Republicans are way too afraid of people saying bad, nasty things about them.  In this they are like Americans in their attitude toward foreigners, i.e., too often self-flagellating.  This is why people stand up and cheer Newt, crazy as he may sometimes appear to be.

I'd be surprised if someone else hasn't made the joke (a billion monkeys hammering a typewriter and all that) but I just felt like having a hissy fit before I go get yelled at by a client.

Nope. But now that you've got me thinking about this: can you list some wealthy people who are worth putting on trading cards? All I can think of are creeps like Warren Buffet.

I, personally, don't care about his taxes. Everyone knows that he's got tons of money, everyone knows he tithes to his church. I would imagine that employs smart tax accountants who know where to take the legal breaks. As long as he's paid up and on good terms with the taxman...why do I need to see it?

Paul A. Rahe

I doubt that Mitt Romney has done anything shameful with regard to his taxes, but I do wonder whether he is capable of defending the defensible. He seems so afraid of putting his foot wrong that he is incapable of putting his foot right. If he had a smidgen of the moxie that Gingrich has been displaying, we would be home free.

I think Roger Clemons is a creep but he's on a trading card.

Think of the possibilities.  Historical cards with Rockefellers, Guggenheims and Gettys.   We can have today's players like Trump and Waltons with yearly stats.  A rookie of the year presentation!

How many companies are on NYSE and NASDAQ?  All the CEOs could have cards.

There is the foriegn league with emerging markets in China and Russia.

I'm quitting my job today to go work on this.  It's gonna be huge!

Well, hey if you make it both successful people and successful corporations (yep, along with stats an' all that) you're right -- it could be huge. Come to me for the design work, okay!

Ok but keep the Buffets.  They are cheap and I have like 4 of them in my bicycle spokes.

Romney is handling his taxes the way he is because he is Romney.  Romney makes the claim he helped create 90k jobs at Staples, Bain provided 10% of their capital so I guess anyone who bought Staples stock could make the same claim.  But anyone who questions his claims about being a job creator is labeled anti-capitalism.  Even Rove says he has not explained his role.  The tax question helps him avoid the Bain questions.  Looks like we have a WW running this time.  Weasel Willard.
