What Will Happen Next in the Middle East
With the situation in Egypt so fluid, I think it's important to concentrate on what we can predict with absolute certainty. If the situation goes pear-shaped with screaming scimitar-wielding Muslim Brothers taking over the reins of power and demanding the immediate cessation of all human progress and the arrest of anyone caught carrying a vagina, there will be lengthy panel discussions on all American news networks about how the root causes of the catastrophe lie in the Bush Freedom Agenda. If, conversely, all is well, and democracy triumphs with rainbows criss-crossing the sky as the Nile turns to chocolate, the idea that Bush's policies had anything to do with it will be deemed by the media to be absurd.

You're just racist.
Liberals will still be blaming Bush a decade from now.

I think the larger point that we are missing, is how all this violence is being stirred up by uncivil rhetoric. The reach of inflammatory speech is farther than we could have thought.

Re: What Will Happen Next in the Middle East
I've read that in Saudi Arabia convicts are heavily sedated before public execution by scimitar. "Moderate" is in the eye of the beholder.

Re: What Will Happen Next in the Middle East
Bush was right about the Freedom Agenda. Either America is the one promoting "freedom" and "democracy," or Islamists will co-opt a twisted version of that and use it to topple autocratic governments.
the mistake the bush admin made in gaza was that they failed to find pro-democracy alternatives to Hamas (the muslim brotherhood in gaza) and the corrupt Fatah party.
they corrected that mistake in Pakistan in 2007 when Bush and blair helped pakistan transition from dictatorship to democracy by promoting free elections AND encouraging the return of beloved pakistan leader Benazir Bhutto to replace Musharraf-- a moderate alternative and a 1000x more acceptable than the Islamists.
And even tho pakistan still has problems with islamists (who assassinated bhutto, and they'll never live that down), the nuclear armed muslim country remains an ally of the US.
Either america sides with the people, or Islamist will present themselves as the ones who support their liberation from autocratic dictators.
