In 1980, President Jimmy Carter ran an ad saying that Reagan was living in a "fantasy world" where he would "shoot first and ask questions later." Sounds familiar, no?

But, Mollie, you know that we can't possibly compare this election to the Carter/Reagan election of 1980. The world is so different now!

Molly, could you elaborate on  your tweet?

The disconnect between what the media are reporting and every single non-media conversation I've had today is really staggering.

Obama in a CBS interview yesterday: “Gov. Romney seems to have a tendency to shoot first and aim later.”

Thanks! I just threw up in my mouth.

Yes, so in my neighborhood (which votes 80% Dem, by the way), and at the gym, and at my children's school (which probably skews somewhat conservative, although there are definitely staffers of both parties who send their kids to school there) and among my friends and family, people were just sick about the assassination of a U.S. Ambassador. They wanted to know how it happened and if it could have been prevented. They worried about our foreign policy and about things getting worse.

The conversations were not political, for the most part. And when they were, apart from one neighbor who is a Democratic media strategist, no one thought Mitt Romney was wrong to criticize the president but tons of people hated the apology tweets/press releases.

The media yesterday were in an alternate universe. And I'm a media critic who tries to think critically about their coverage, so I'm not just doing the "wah wah liberal media" thing that many do.

And people thought Orwell wrote fiction.

Groupthink and doublethink are rampant on the left.

It would be great to find some of these people today and see what they think.  Then take the ones who have changed their minds and update this commercial.

It's reassuring to remember that there were a lot of  doofuses back then too, and it didn't stop Reagan from winning in a landslide.

But... but... but... Katie, things are so different now, there's no way we can compare 1980 to today! Besides, we don't have the Perfect Candidate, so we're doomed to lose to Obama.

Wow.  The DNC has got to do an ad where they outline parallels between the 9/11/12 embassy attacks, and the 1979 Embassy attack, Carter's response and Obama's response, Carter's slam of Reagan and Obama's slam of Romney.  This is like Groundhog Day, and the electorate will see that right away.  This is their chance to join Obama and Carter at the hip in everyone's minds.

And remember, it was the LeftyDinosaurMedia that made it all possible, with their leading the charge in slamming Romney.

Maybe we should send them thank-you notes.

This is a good find, Mollie.  I work with a lot of immigrants and I have to keep reminding them of doomsday predictions from the past that never came true.. (Grandma eating dog food during the Contract with America years for the audacity of trying to reduce the deficit - which now is a talking point in favor of Clinton).

The RNC cannot do it.  That would expose the Romney campaign to justified attacks for using the current situation to gain votes.  Even Rove & Co. have to be careful how they use the attacks Egypt, Libya & Yemen.

An unknown source making a poster for Facebook is one thing.  TY ad are another.

The press conference in Florida will help.  Even the media condemnation of it draws attention to Romney caring more about what happened than Obama.  And if Romney came off dry and restrained, that's him.  Obama is the one who fakes sympathy.

I'd say restrained is close to gravitas, which is what the situation calls for.

Obama can't even fake sympathy convincingly... at least Billy Boy Clinton was a convincing faker.
