Christie Time Boss

It got an "Oh my!" out of me. It's not very flattering. Yet there seems to be something else lurking in those shadows surrounding the Governor's thick neck.  It's causing a bit of a stir around the web.

Time Magzine has a history of giving photos to artists before publication for "interpretation" (read: doctoring, manipulation).  You will recall their infamous OJ Simpson cover.

Chris Christie has his own idea of what "interpretation" Time may be suggesting, which you can watch in the video below.

So what is your reaction to the photo, both visceral and after some reflection/investigation?

Tommy:

You're the expert on NJ politics, but based on what I know, if I were Christie, I think I'd like it.

He looks tough and like he's in charge, which I think are attributes that appeal to folks in NJ.

In the meantime, while I don't agree with several of Christie's recent actions and statements (the crying after speaking with Bruce Springsteen was a bridge too far for me, and I'm a crier), let's not forget he's running for reelection in a state where Republicans have to present themselves differently than in the heartland.

I'm less of a fan than I once was, but I want him in the party. I think the cover probably portrays him as he'd like to be portrayed:  the Boss.

Huh? Christie weighs close to 500 lbs; this photo is flattering IMO.

Besides, after he worked so hard to lose the election for the GOP, he is dead to me. I don't really care what he looks like on the cover of the People's Republic of Time.

Natch. New Jersey is next to New York. If this were a governor of a midwest state that got flooded, the cover would be something else.

Proximity is important to the New York-centric press.

If you're the master of failing to draw conclusions from federal disaster relief efforts, past and present, then boom!  On the cover of time you go.

With a bunch of other clowns whose faces have graced the cover of the magazine with a wildly reduced readership.  Mission accomplished, I guess.

@EThompson: hah! Agreed. Let Christie and Time have each other. Both are ships that hopefully sink sooner rather than later. And good riddance to both!

I know there's a distinct chance that I will be forced to pull the lever for him for president in four years.

For now, I wish he would disappear. He's really getting on my nerves.

It doesn't strike me as a flattering picture. I see Time as preventing the governor from using the cover, in a positive way, in the future. They tell Gov. Christie they love him now, but Time knows this is temporary.

I live in NJ, and just as Dennis Prager expressed with his own thoughts regarding Christie on his Friday show, Christie has lost my support as well.

I grieve for the days Time would hire someone like Boris Artzybasheff to knock out a cover (Time cover somewhere around mid-page).  I also miss the gravitational effects of celery on attractive women's underpants.  Modern life sucks.

Pork loving (in both the food and earmark sense) RINO.  He's dead to me.

SParker: another Artzybacheff fan! Although "fan" isn't the right word for me, really; I find his stuff almost Giger-esque in its creepiness.

Colin: summed it up for me as well.

If that happens, I will switch to the other side of the old "a libertarian vote is a democrat vote" argument, because at that point there won't be any difference between R and D.

I think the photo is actually flattering -- it makes him look thinner.

When you're stuck in the past, it's all good.  I agree on the creepiness (a hint of fascist/futurist in it), but I find it a pleasant creepy.  Which probably says very bad things about me.

I see that most of the great Time cover illustrators were first-named Boris.  Like Boris Chaliapin.  (I was trying to figure out why I thought legendary Russian basso when I saw his name.  His dad was Feodor.)

Agreed. The shadowing diminishes the chin(s)

Also, I'm having trouble locating the neck that Tommy speaks of.

As for the man himself, slowly but surely familiarity is breeding contempt, which is really too bad because for a time Christie was pure fun. He's the best Jersey can reasonably expect, but the country can do better.
