What Bin Laden Bounce?
Regarding the slaying of bin Laden, Americans seem to fall anywhere on the spectrum of emotion from solemn relief to sheer elation, and they -- regardless of party affiliation -- are generally grateful to the president for facilitating, or at least not getting in the way of, the successful operation.
But while Obama experienced a sizable "bin Laden bounce" in his personal approval rating, a new poll reveals that the bin Laden bounce does not translate to the generic ballot.
Despite a seven-point boost to a 54 percent approval rating in the latest Gallup poll, Obama leads an unnamed Republican 43-40 percent. That is virtually unchanged from April 20-22, when he and the generic Republican were tied at 41 percent (the two-point jump for Obama falls within the margin of error).
The poll underscores a point being made by political observers: The slaying of bin Laden, one of the world's most wanted men since the 9/11 attacks, hardly guarantees Obama's reelection in 2012.
That's not hugely surprising news, but I mention it merely to reiterate Pat's exhortation to "buck up, gang."

Re: What Bin Laden Bounce?
From the article: "Gallup said the divide on Obama's poll numbers could be because the president's climbing approval rating is being driven by Republicans, who still would vote against Obama next year: Republicans' approval of the president jumped 11 points between late April and now, the highest among any political group." This reporting is really malpractice. This President is in real trouble and is easily beatable.
I]m most surprised that the press has doubled-down on this guy. They truly look pathetic the way they continue to carry his water. I thought they'd eventually turn/start actually reporting just to save their professional reputations but it appears they'll go down with him.
Thank 'Gore' for the internet

Re: What Bin Laden Bounce?
I'd rather give the credit to the Special Forces commander that Obama would've given all the blame to, if things went real bad. He's the one that deserves the credit.

Re: What Bin Laden Bounce?
In the old days, the media would create the spin, and lay it on the public. The public, having no alternative, followed the story as the media told it. But these days, the public has plenty of alternatives. And the difference is interesting.
The media spin is that with the Bin Laden episode, Obama has forever dispelled the notion that he's incompetent and weak, and that his sudden image makeover will stick.
The public isn't buying it, even when the media rig the polls. Obama's "spasm of spine" lasted for about a week.

Re: What Bin Laden Bounce?
KC, I think Obama might have earned some credit for being Presidential from getting Bin Laden - if he and his entire entourage hadn't instantly and incessantly bragged and brayed about what a gutsy call he made and what a great triumph it was for him personally. As it is, he looked like a child who'd just hit a baseball for the first time ever and was so pleased and excited with himself that he forgot to run to first base.

re order to kill Osama, it may be a "Gutsy Call" for this president, but it's a "no brainer" for any Republican.
