Things have seemed a little serious around here lately, at least in the threads I've been in. So, as is my wont, I decided to start something a little lighter.

We've got a little over 3 weeks till the opening of the London Summer Olympics, so I've got some questions for my fellow Ricocheters.

  1. What event are you most looking forward to seeing in the Summer Games?
  2. What event do you wish they'd yank from the Summer Games?
  3. What sport do you most want to see as an event in future Summer Games?

I think I might know what one wins (or loses) for question 2, but I could be wrong... I have been in the past.

I'm up for any of the Paralympic events... :) If I'd known about them when I was younger, I MIGHT have tried to see about participating, but alas. *sigh* other than that, gymnastics. :)

CW, my guess for your #2 prediction is either synchronized swimming or rhythmic gymnastics.

Also, I wish they'd bring baseball and softball back. Seems like their elimination after the last Olympics was an intentional swipe at the US.

Sure I'm rather ordinary with answers to first 2 questions:

1) Want to see gymnastics, (Artistic not Rythmic)

2) Least want to see Synchronized Swimming

3) Sport to Add:

a) (Ordinary)  Baseball

b) (Somewhat less ordinary)  Rock Climbing

I like watching Olympics, but want somehow, for the overdone staging and need to always build massive new facilities at taxpayers expense to be eliminated.  A games should be able to show a profit, not a huge loss for taxpayers.

I know that when synchronized swimming comes on I'm gonna be reaching for the remote, how's that?

OK, I love synchronized swimming and rhythmic gymnastics. They're fun sports. Regular gymnastics is also fun. Yes, I'm a girly-girl.

The boating sports are also fun to watch. But I'll probably miss the Olympic coverage this year.

I think NBC Sports is gonna stream most of it online... not sure of the website right now, but with a little searching I bet you can find it.

1.  Swimming.  All swimming, all the time.  Men's, women's, all events. Followed by diving, gymnastics, and the marathon.

(Synchro gets a bum rap: it is incredibly difficult)

2.  No answer (although one wearies of the overhyped basketball games)

3.  Hmmmm.  Will have to think about that.

1. Women's soccer, the two games I have tickets for.

2. Back when there were few television channels, I would want to keep the numbers of events down. These days, I don't see the value in scarcity; the more the merrier.

3. Relatedly, I was sad to see Softball go. The Softball games in Beijing were a lot of fun (I was working out there at the time).

I think this is the first Olympics thread, so it seems worth throwing out a question of whether anyone is coming out for the games, and if so if they'd be interested in (the first?) euro-meetup?

I like most of them and will watch them all. Gymnastics are my favorite What I can't stand is all the yakking. I always keep the remote close at hand so I can turn the mute off and on. I would love to attend another Olympics, especially the winter version. I will scan a couple photos I took at the 1996 Atlanta games and post them.

I'll just answer number three: putting baseball/softball back for sure, but also, adding golf.

  1. Easy -- the Closing Ceremonies.  (I don't watch, I just like knowing that they are underway.)
  2. The medal competition for schmaltziest human interest story.
  3. There are no sports I despise enough that aren't already in the games, though if they could give out medals for soccer player flopping performances, that would be interesting.

My toleration for sports announcers and analysts is at an all-time low and dropping.  If I could get a secondary audio program of ballgames that only included the field announcer and the crowd noises, I'd be happy.  But the Olympics give these people waaaay too much time to blather on and on.

1. Water polo, running, gymnastics.2. Beach volleyball...hey it brings in the crowds and commercials but...3. the winter sports have triathlon with shooting as part if it. Would be interesting to have some combination with shooting added. Bruce Jenner but with a gun.

I love the Olympics, winter and summer. I even like synchronized swimming, sculling, and most any event you can name - with the lone exception of the equestrian events. My favorites in the summer are the decathlon, diving, gymnastics, wrestling, though I watch as many events as I possibly can. I'd probably only get rid of the boring equestrian events; the Olympics are for human athletes, not for animals. Last, I'd add chess if only to justify the varsity letter I earned in high school.

Favorite:  4 X 100 relay (men's and women's)--to win you have to be on the brink of disaster at each hand-off.

baton

[I have the same issue as Mel--it had better happen fast or I'm gone]

Least:  synchronized swimming (though they really are talented); long swimming races.

Rugby should be included as a demo sport. It's a great game.
