What A Difference A Year Makes

In case you're watching MSNBC (which is late to the coverage) instead of Fox News (which is covering events in Libya live), Moammar Gaddafi’s four-decade-long rule over Libya has crumbled as rebel fighters took Tripoli and many parts of the capital. The end is here. Check out the picture above. As I discovered on Twitter:
From @PourMeCoffee: No more smiles. Taken *less than year ago* at Arab-Africa Summit: http://j.mp/qyHqbT Ben Ali, Saleh, Gaddafi, Mubarak.
(Also, if you're as interested in the crazyman Gaddafi's fashion sense as I am, here's a slide show of some of his greatest hits.)

Re: What A Difference A Year Makes
Will Obama be claiming this as a victory for his Libya policy? I suppose so. Does he deserve it?

The worst of the lot -- Assad -- is still in power.

Item One: Locate Al Megrahi, the medical miracle.Take him to the USA, for research purposes. Keep him there for as long as he lives.

You are right, Mollie, his dictator-chic was miles ahead of the epaulet-wearing strongmen elsewhere.

It will be interesting to see what the Obama exit strategy is. Shall we have a Ricochet pool on how long US forces are in Libya?

Iraq; over 4000 US military personnel have lost their lives in the struggle, estimates of the total cost range up into the billions or trillions according to how you wish to play accounting games, this friday Al Qaeda in Iraq vowed to carry out 100 revenge attacks there to celebrate Ramadan.
However in regards to Libya no doubt matters are different, right? Where is Gadhafi by the way?

I don't see how. Wasn't he leading from behind on this one?

Not gonna miss this guy. Then again, I dread what will replace him.

I fear that the cure is worse than the disease. I tend towards the Andy MacCarthy point of view: "It appears that those who wanted Qaddafi supplanted by an unknown that is known only to include virulently anti-American Islamists are about to get their wish."

Re: What A Difference A Year Makes
I know that Qaddafi is a very bad man, but those clothes make me giggle every time. I know it's wrong. I can't help it.

Perhaps Obama's version of Carter's Iran?
Re: What A Difference A Year Makes
Let's be epistemologically honest and say that we don't know what will happen. I wish with all my heart for less suffering, and pray that Obama did the right thing, whether or not we can score political points by saying he did not.

Good to see Gaddafi (modestly self-titled King of Kings) has a thrifty wife who has turned those curtains into a raiment fit for a king. Their reduced circumstances will demand more of her skills in the future.
Without an escape flight, I will be suprised if any of his family are left alive by the end of the week. Tribal wars in North Africa tend towards the genocidal.
They are tying the slipknots as we speak....

Re: What A Difference A Year Makes
Huh? Is the demand for accountability somehow dishonest? I would have preferred some epistemological honesty --or any other kind-- from the administration, who embarked on this adventure with a mixture of naivete and arrogance that was breathtaking. The president (and those that supported this, like Max Boot) had no clue who would take over (and still don't); cared not a whit for the collateral damage that accompanied our bombings, nor for any legal framework to justify them. No, Obama thought this would give him an easy "humanitarian" intervention and inject some macho street-cred into his 2012 campaign. He'll claim credit for taking out Osama, too. Depend upon a subservient MSM to spin this his way, no matter how far south things go post-KaDaffy.
But now that the world's foremost fashionista/dictator is on the way out, who will inherit his entourage of purple-camo-clad fembot bodyguards? Putin's a sort of James-Bond-y villain; you think he might take them on?
