Well, That's Frustrating

I just composed a long, thoughtful post in response to your Assignment Desk questions. I answered them all and solved all the other problems of Western Civilization while I was at it. Unfortunately, my computer crashed--no, I didn't save it; yes, yes, I'm as lacking in foresight as the French banking system--and it is really and truly lost, it seems.
I'll try again after I've regained my will to live.

Re: Well, That's Frustrating
I know the feeling.
About six months ago I posited My theory of how neutrinos can travel faster than light in the Member Feed, then *poof*, it was gone.
I wonder what ever happened to it..... ?

Re: Well, That's Frustrating
Back in the "Steam Age" of personal computers, i.e. before hard drives, when computers ran CP/M as an operating system and used 5 1/4" single density, floppy disks, I managed to delete the entire second chapter of the final draft of my Senior Thesis. It was late on a Sunday night after a long day's composing and editing and I needed "just a little more space" on the data disk, so I decided to delete the "Mirror File" on the disk but erased the actual file instead. Of course to do this I had to override the safety protocols, and answer "Yes" when the computer asked if I was sure I wanted to do this?
The thesis being due in three days, I had to go "Dumpster Diving" in the basement of my apartment building to find the trash bag of crumpled-up rejects that I had thrown away earlier so I could try and piece together and re-type the chapter.
Believe me, I know your pain right now.

Re: Well, That's Frustrating
Ah Claire, anger and frustration! I had a incident that cost me dearly many years ago. My father, a man of hard principles, said, "I guess you won't do that again."
So far, I haven't.

Young Lady,
Because you are very good at your thing and you have won my admiration as well as my respect let me share this with you. GRIN
Forty years ago I became aware of a long term social trend in Western Civilization that almost no one was talking about. As I am a long time science fiction reader I decided that this long term social trend deserved at least one science fiction novel.
The problem was that while I've written a few poems I was almost completely innocent of any experience with fiction. My one or two attempts at fiction were so bad that it is better for all if I deny them completely.
So I set out to write the novel. Believe me I know of what you (plural) speak. If there is a way to foul up, delete or lose a working file I've done it. The good news is that I finally have the final polish about 20% complete. Things are proceeding smoothly for the time being.

Re: Well, That's Frustrating
I once inadvertently zapped eight hours of drafting on a legal brief--and I couldn't even blame a computer crash.
Save often.

The old "my computer crashed and I lost my homework" excuse? ;)

Re: Well, That's Frustrating
I lost hundreds of digital pictures from my days as a boxing journalist when Windows crashed on my laptop. The last time this sort of thing happened I took it to a pro and he restored all my pics and documents. This time (yes, I know) I let my wife talk me in to having a "friend from her work" fix it. Now it's all gone--pictures of accomplished boxers and trainers from several years of work--gone.
Re: Well, That's Frustrating
Claire,
I've been there. Nothing worse.
Re: Well, That's Frustrating
I am now blaming a sinister conspiracy. It feels much better than blaming myself.

You guys are hilarious!
Re: Well, That's Frustrating
Anthony Burgess feels your pain: he was on the way to the Post Office to deliver a manuscript of his latest book, when two youths on a motorbike came up behind him and grabbed the sachel in which the novel was kept. They sped off.
He turned around and went home and wrote it again.

Claire, I've been in the technology business for 35 years, in Berkeley, Los Alamos, Austin, and now Denver. I have learned that technology is, indeed, wonderful...
When it works.
As to your loss, well I've lost articles, Power Points, even the final version of a critical piece of geophysical code while on deadline, so I understand the frustration.
Then, as my Daddy always said, "It'll feel better when it quits hurtin'".
Regards,

I hear the cry of a sys admin who requires a proper thrashing. You shall now embed pwd into the appropriate shell scripts less I mock you a second time.
