The New York Times Magazine has written a profile that leaves me loving Sarah Palin!

And (maybe this is wishful thinking) something in there made me think Sarah is reading a little Claire Berlinski and maybe even a little Peter Robinson?

I continue to read all that I can get my hands on — and reading biographies of, yes, Thatcher for instance, and of course Reagan ...

Ursula,

I just posted an article in the Member Feed about Sarah Palin on which I'd like to get your feedback. It discusses Palin's impact on the impending defeat of Joe Miller in the AK senate race.

I also wondered which books she was reading and those seemed like very likely contenders! I'm astonished this article came from the NY Times. Even in the places where it points out mistakes that she's made, it's an astonishingly flattering portrait of a woman most of the people at the paper seem to loathe (to an irrational degree).

I've noticed of late a slight change in the tone on here towards Palin--from the editors, mostly--and I wonder if this is something that's happening across the board. If even the NY Times is working to help her change her image, she might really be able to surprise people...

I remain unconvinced that the NYT has anything other than underhanded motives. Most left wingers would love for Palin to be the nominee in 2012 and I can see why. The Times has never tried to be fair or to court more conservative readers and I'm not going to take the bait until there is a longer demonstrated record of them comin' round.I would more quickly believe they are engaging in the classic "set up"..

Palin in two years will never overcome her negatives. Once rampant ridicule and piling on Tina Fey style has taken root in the popular culture, fugget-about-it, sorry to say.

When people say she is as or more qualified than Obama, while it may be true is a) faint praise and b) not what Americans want right now. They want/need someone a lot more qualified than Obama, and there are plenty of Republicans that fit that bill.

The fact she quit the Governorship after two years is the poison pill.

Again, I say this as someone who likes her and generally agrees with her. I just want someone who can win, and I don't think she can.

All excellent, excellent points, Franco. But it's possible that the Times thought it was a hit piece of sorts, but that all the things they think are unattractive (ignoring Repub. party folks, keeping Todd so close, taking months to approve media requests) are actually attractive qualities in my book! I think Claire said it recently, but choosing the right people to surround you (loyal, superstar thinkers, policy wonks) is a much-overlooked skill. Maybe she has that. Just maybe.
