Allow me to introduce Professor Robert J. Lieber, who will be a Guest Contributor at Ricochet this week. Dr. Lieber is Professor of Government and International Affairs at Georgetown University, where he specializes in American foreign policy and U.S. relations with the Middle East and Europe. He has authored or edited sixteen books on international relations, U.S. foreign policy, and energy security. His most recent title, Power and Willpower in The American Future: Why the US is Not Destined to Decline, was released by Cambridge University Press earlier this year to widespread acclaim.

Professor Lieber has been a foreign policy adviser in several presidential campaigns and a consultant to the State Department and for National Intelligence Estimates. His byline has appeared in a wide variety of major publications, including the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Christian Science Monitor, and Commentary. There's more to Professor Lieber than just his foreign policy bona fides, however: his resume also boasts a walk-on part in the Alfred Hitchcock film classic "North By Northwest."

Please join us in welcoming Professor Lieber to Ricochet.

Sounds like a great edition. Getting my money's worth for becoming a member. I would like to hear his wisdom on what to do with that mess in Syria.

I think someday, if we get into a war with a terrorist state--with Iran for example--that military opponent is going to be prepared to hit us where we're really vulnerable--domestically. It doesn't have to be high tech either. Think about experiencing twenty or thirty Mumbai-like terrorist attacks in one day. And then tomorrow, twenty or thirty more random attacks. And the next day, twenty or thirty more random attacks. American commerce would completely shut down. We're so vulnerable because we're so porous to intruders. I wonder how plausible a risk Prof. Lieber thinks that is. It seems like that's our soft underbelly. It would be a lot more effective than launching missiles at us.

Prof. Lieber, thanks for joining the Ricochet community. I am eager to learn of which foreign policy priorities deserve more attention than they are currently getting in the media and academia.

Welcome Prof Lieber.

Troy: I know you were just rewriting the Prof's standard bio, but you do realise that singling out the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Christian Science Monitor as "major publications" is just enabling their perversion of all that is good, great and American, right?

Welcome, sir.  Please consider the energy security aspects of Europe in a topic, both the extant (from the Middle East and Russia), but also perhaps illuminating us on the strange issue of potential Russian interference with fracking in other nations, like (I believe) Poland.  Perhaps it's Bulgaria.  Something is going on there and I would like to know more!

Professor, Am I crazy to believe the US should wait for an written request & approval from the Arab League including an acknowledgement that  innocent blood will be shed in every major cities' leading newspaper requesting American Military Firepower, before a single jet crosses the Syria boarder?
