Welcome Jonathan Horn
Joining us on Ricochet as Guest Contributor this week is Jonathan Horn, who worked alongside Ricochet's own Bill McGurn and Troy Senik as a speechwriter for President George W. Bush. After his work in the Bush administration, Jonathan moved into the private sector and worked as Director of Public Affairs at McGraw-Hill where he wrote for the CEO and advised the company, which includes Standard & Poor's, on communications in the wake of the financial crisis. For the last year, Jonathan has been running his own speechwriting and public affairs company which serves a variety of political and private sector clients. And when he's not advising clients or writing commentary, Jonathan devotes much of his time to his obsession with the Civil War. (Whether this obsession includes his participation in reenactments is a question I'm hoping he'll answer).
Please join me in welcoming Jonathan Horn to Ricochet!

Welcome aboard.
Re: Welcome Jonathan Horn
Welcome, Jonathan! As Diane notes, I had the pleasure of working alongside Jonathan in the Bush White House (as did Bill McGurn and Meghan Clyne) and thus I already know what the rest of you will discover this week: that Jonathan has a first-rate mind and a pen to match. This should be a treat.
Re: Welcome Jonathan Horn
Thank you for the warm welcome to Ricochet. I have been looking forward to this week for a long time. In her very generous introduction, Diane mentioned my interest in the Civil War. Now is probably the time for me to confess that this interest is largely confined to the safety of archives and books. While I enjoy visiting battlefields, my wife has made me promise not to dress up. Here, of course, I will be talking mostly politics. Thanks again for having me!

My attitude about this, Jonathan?
That it's about time you turned up.
Welcome, welcome, a thousand times, welcome.

Re: Welcome Jonathan Horn
We can always use a military history hound. [:-) Welcome. And if you don't mind me asking, why the Civil War? Just curious . . .

Re: Welcome Jonathan Horn
One reason Burke said he feared for the future of the French Republic was that its national assembly seemed composed largely of lawyers, men whose professional advancement depended upon their abilities to obfuscate, confuse, or turn on its head those old devils, facts.
While I am always happy to see an addition to the Ricochet tent I would hate so see it become a forum for people who were pleased to invent such things as the WIN button.
Re: Welcome Jonathan Horn
Thank you all for the kind notes today. Just to address a couple of them: Peter and Troy, I will try my best to live up to the high standards you have set here for members of our old profession. HVTs, I grew up close to the Potomac, so reminders of the history were everywhere.
Re: Welcome Jonathan Horn
Welcome, Jonathan!
Please use your enthusiasm for the Civil War to explain the Republican primaries.
Great to have you!
Re: Welcome Jonathan Horn
Troy, you forgot about his deft touch with humor.
