Welcome Chris Gibson
Dropping in for a visit as Ricochet's Guest Contributor this week is freshman Representative Chris Gibson of New York's 20th Congressional District.
Congressman Gibson, a longtime friend of Ricochet, spent 24 years in the Army, rising to rank of Colonel. He deployed seven times, including four combat tours in Iraq, and deployments to Kosovo, the Southwestern US for a counter-drug operation, and most recently to Haiti where he commanded the 82nd Airborne Division's 2nd Brigade Combat Team during the opening month of an humanitarian relief operation.
Other key assignments included tours teaching American Politics at the United States Military Academy at West Point, serving as a Congressional Fellow with US Representative Jerry Lewis (R-CA), the Chairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, and completing a Hoover National Security Affairs Fellowship at Stanford University.
He holds an MPA and PhD in Government from Cornell University and is the author of Securing the State, a book on national security decision-making published in 2008. Chris has been married to Mary Jo, a NYS Licensed Clinical Social Worker, for over 13 years and they have three children.

Re: Welcome Chris Gibson
Welcome, Congressman!
I will throw a question out for you. I see your wife is a social worker. I have three small children, one with special needs. We feel blessed that she was born while we lived in NYS. (We have since moved to CT.) The services she received beginning at birth were amazing. I believe NYS has one of the best reputations in the country for social services, at least for children. I wonder if you see a way that NYS can still maintain that reputation while also solving the disastrous financial situation of the state.
I hope my question makes sense. Regardless, many welcomes and all our gratitude for your service to our country.

Sir, welcome, sir! We salute you for your service on this your current field of battle. We look forward with great anticipation to your action reports. Do not think to spare us the details of every bloody engagement. We revel in the clash of great ideas and the triumph of truth and righteousness. Sally forth to victory, and return with the spoils of unconstitutional legislation, bound in fetters to the triumph of Republican Federalism! Huah!

"Sir?" It's a little tough to think of "Congressman" as a compliment!
Welcome, Congressman Gibson (on second thought, Sir Gibson doesn't quite work), and thank you for your service!
Re: Welcome Chris Gibson
Welcome, Congressman Gibson! We're delighted to have you here.
An introductory question: you're a conservative with a Ph.D. Given the tenor of the modern academy, would you recommend a similar career path for today's intellectually inclined young conservatives?
