My hometown paper, the San Jose Mercury News, innately grasping the root of economic angst in the wake of yesterday's jobs report, leads today's print edition with the following headline:

Job news a blow to Obama

Dismal employment report undercuts push for deficit deal and confidence in recovery

Poor Obama.  How much bad news can one man stand?  I don't know how much more my confidence in this rollicking recovery can be undercut, but my newspaper's preoccupation with its Dear Leader rather than the citizenry is certainly having an effect.

Reading through the entire recycled New York Times article detailing the very sad news for the president, I came upon the de rigueur declamation of bewilderment and surprise accompanying any Age of Obama economic article--it must be required by the NYT style manual.

Friday's unemployment report baffled economists who had predicted much stronger job creation.

For the second straight month, employers added scarcely any jobs in June, startling evidence that the economic recovery is stumbling.

Ask not what you can do for your country, ask what you can do for your president.

Remember in the first months he was in office, all the stories about how hard it was for him to be President? All those problems he inherited that he now had to deal with--simultaneously!--and the worst part about it was that people expected him to actually get results.  How unreasonable.

The focus of our sympathy should be on what a hard time the President is having getting people to like him.  Those dastardly employers, refusing to hire employees just to lower the President's approval ratings.

It's the liberal economists I feel sorry for. Everything that they have predicted from the beginning of this recession has been wrong. I am still waiting for one of them -- say, Paul Krugman -- to come forward, saying, "We do not know what we are talking about."

For Paul Krugman, the inadequacy is implicit in every column.

Of course, all the criticism, and the unemployment, arise from raw, contemptible racism. This President can only fail because America would rather see friends, family members, and neighbors suffer than a black man succeed. In fact, it may be argued, that it was racists that voted him into office so they could needle him for golfing. Every. Single. Day.

Who knew he would turn out to be a better bowler than President?

And this confirms the fundamental truth spoken by David Plouffe: that voters vote based on their personal economic circumstances. Where Plouffe erred was in asserting that the unemployment rate and GDP growth rate aren't part of those voters' personal calculations: we see how weak the economy is and how scarce jobs are, and we feel insecure and afraid, anxious for the security of our own jobs and assets. It's wonderful that the headline writers care so much about Obama; it would be nice if they cared even a little about the people unemployed and underemployed and anxious about their continued employment during the Obama Non-Recovery.
