I could get behind Rand Paul as VP. What do the rest of you think?

After thirty seconds thought, I say no. Too little upside, too much downside. But I'm still open-minded on the subject.

What's the downside, in your view, TR? I'm open too.

Re: Way To Snag Both Social Cons And Libertarians...
I very much like the idea and so would thousands of Ron Paul fans.

I would refer all, including Sen. Paul, to John Nance Garner's famous comments about the vice presidency.
Sen. Paul is doing too much good work in the Senate. Why would anyone want to waste him as VP?
That's not why they were meeting. They're probably working out an endorsement or some convention stuff.

That's true. And a good point. Here's a possible answer (just thinking out loud and in no way committed to the idea):
He would reassure and fortify both social cons and liberals who remain doubtful or unenthused about Mitt.
He would be the natural next-in-line for President. It would be a strong signal that Republicans are serious about cutting spending and returning power to the people.

I don't think so, Katie. Not unless he came out hardcore with a "No Jew- or Black- baiting" stand like Clinton taking Sister Souljah to task on steroids.
There is way, way too much of that creepy anti-Semitic, white nationalist feel for far too many of Ron's backers. Leaving decency aside (which we shouldn't) I doubt the utility among swing voters.
I think it is entirely worthwhile to attempt to tie up portions of the Right, but Rand is from a state we'll win anyway. So why risk his dad's baggage?

Not Ron, Rand.
Do you feel the same about Rand?

O sorry. I just saw your last line.

My feeling, when I hear Rand Paul speak, is that he shares his father's principles, but not his prejudices. Maybe I'm too optimistic.

Yes.

There's some noise that he already is. There's some talk in libertarian circles that if Romney wins Paul might challenge him in 2016.

I'm down with that plan.

Rand needs more time. A little distance from Dad (Ron.)

Re: Way To Snag Both Social Cons And Libertarians...
You may be right, Doug. Paul Ryan is still my number 1.
Bobby Jindal my number 2.

Very worthwhile to consider him

Re: Way To Snag Both Social Cons And Libertarians...
Agreed. Plus, it would be nice if the combined Republican ticket had more than 6 years in statewide office.

Re: Way To Snag Both Social Cons And Libertarians...
That was my thinking, featuring almost exclusively a full scale assault on Ron as opposed to Rand - featuring The Elder in some of his most vociferous arguments, where he gets so into it that it sounds and looks (we're talking just optics here) like the Doomsday Guy on the street corner. Plus a different excerpt from the Ron Paul newsletters every couple of days.
Oddly, I think if Rand were running his own campaign, it would be easier for him to defeat than being in the #2 slot (not sure why I think that...)

True. Another good point. that would eliminate:
Chris Christie
Scott Walker
Bob McDonnell
Marco Rubio
Among others. Wouldn't it?
Might be good.
We sure have a strong bench. Have the Dems got anything LIKE comparable?

Yes it would. Them's the breaks.

Judging by the careers of their up-and-coming stars Eliot Spitzer, Anthony Weiner and John Edwards, the Democrats apparently built their triple-A team's stadium right next to the bordello.

He's my favorite person in Washington right now.
But he's too principled for Romney.
