So we've discussed how the Democratic Party had removed any mention of God in its platform. It had also removed any mention of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Neither of these omissions sat well with parts of the party and so there was a move when the convention opened tonight to put them back in. Easy peasy, right?

All it took was a simple 2/3 vote in the affirmative to get those references back in. Except when Convention Chair (and Los Angeles Mayor) Antonio Villaraigosa asked for people to vote, it was split down the middle at best. In my own view, neither side had a clear majority. Others, including those who were in the hall, say the "no" voters had a majority. No one thinks that Villaraigosa's opinion -- that the ayes had 2/3 majority -- is based in fact.

Anyway, he takes a vote multiple times, ignores the advice of a woman who explains to him that he can't force the vote, and says the "ayes" have it. And the crowd boos.

You can watch for yourself here:

I'm not sure if they were booing God, Jerusalem, Villaraigosa's violation of the democratic process or some combination therein. But that's not going to make for a pretty campaign commercial.

Understand that Obama is supposed to have personally 'intervened' to put God and Jerusalem back, which 'begs the question,' why didn't he know what it said in the first place?I guess they had to pass the platform before he could find out what was in it.

That right there is what is known as "a taste of your own medicine." Dems didn't get 2/3 of the vote for a major reform like a government takeover of healthcare either (Obamacare). Villaraigosa just reconciled the amendment to the platform. We couldn't have written a script this favorable to our side if we tried.

Which is why I'm sure it will be rapidly erased from history by the complicit media. There is no pravda in Pravda.

It is like how Obamacare was passed! The Chair just "deemed" it!

Rather surreal to watch that spectacle. I am reminded of how the European Union came into being, votes being held repeatedly until the citizens gave the "right" answer or when they failed to do so had their votes ignored and treaties were simply passed regardless. The form of democracy without the substance.

If we belong to the government, then in all likelyhood the Dem conventioneers belong to the Dem Party.  As has been noted with Obama's personal decisions overriding existing law, who could be surprised when the convention chairman overrides the will of the conventioneers?

Serfs have no rights.  Unborn humans have no rights.  Dem conventioneers have no rights.  The "no rights" party is giving us another demonstration of the real positions of the leadership.

I just heard an audio clip of Nancy Pelosi extolling the democratic party as supporting the right to vote. I wonder if that applies to voice votes.

It reminds you of how Obamacare was passed.

The irony is they'd probably be better off just letting it ride. Now not only does the vote itself come across as gross pandering to "flyover country," but you have half the delegates on video essentially saying, "To [the underworld] with those rubes!"

I remain skeptical of all this "landslide" talk, but the Dems sure seem to be doing everything they can to prove Prof. Rahe right.

Let's isolate two segments of that clip. The second vote where Villagairosa speeeaaakkkss slllloooowwwwllllyyy so the kids get the hint. "Hey guys, you don't have to believe this shtuff (in the manner of Michelle Obama), we just have to put it in the platform so's our guy can get the votes of those gullible Bible clingers and the remaining American Jews who actually care about Israel." What a hoot!

The second moment is spookier to me. The part where Strickland says, "President Obama recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel..." The capriciousness of that statement... it's as if the American government's position on Israel is solely dependent on the opinion of the incumbent president at any given moment, regardless of any historical precedent. "Emperor Nero deems that..." (and if you know what's good for you, you'll agree with him.)

Libs can't help it. Totalitarianism is built-in to their ideology.

WS: by elevating the importance of party platforms [& abortion] Democrats sprung the trap they're currently ensared in. There's little doubt that the party appears to be lurching leftward at this year's convention [...] stripping the words "God" & "Jerusalem" out of the party platform are such a perfect encapsulation of this, it's no wonder that even the likes of Paul Begala called has called the Democratic platform contretemps today "beyond awkward" & "an unforced error by my party." Michael Yaki, who ran the Democratic platform committee in 2008, told Slate's Dave Weigel, "The best platforms don't generate controversy & certainly do no harm. [...] because Obama felt the need to personally intervene to change the platform—where Romney didn't—Obama now owns the Democratic platform [...] [Romney] is now pushing the Obama campaign to "state in unequivocal terms whether or not he believes Jerusalem is Israel’s capital." [Obama] has tried very hard to date to avoid being boxed in to saying this, & many White House officials have brazenly tried to avoid answering the simple question: What is the capitol of Israel? After today, Obama may have to finally cough up an answer.

I would have loved to hear the DNC vote on adding Cthulhu to the platform.

I'm a little surprised they didn't add a reference to the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Respect woman my foot, Villaraigosa completely ignored her and like how they rammed ObamaCare down everyone's throat, they rammed their motion down their own supporters throats ( clearly without 2/3 majority). How democratic!

If something like this happened at the RNC, it would lead every network news broadcast until the election. It would be held up as proof that Republicans are hopelessly out of touch.  Every Republican on TV would be asked to comment on it.  But since this makes the Dems look crazy, the media will make this disappear by the weekend.  Like it never happened.  Oh well, at least it will tide us over until the jobs report comes out.

mezzrow: The mayor must not be a lawyer.  If he is, he's not a very good one.

Well, he failed the bar 4 times, so you are correct on both counts -- he is not a lawyer, and he is not a very good one.

The clip, however, is the greatest campaign ad I have ever seen.

Interesting. This occurrence is actually receiving a small bit of attention. While checking email messages this article was put forward by my provider:

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Facing unhappy pro-Israel groups amid a Republican-led outcry, Democrats gathered Wednesday at their presidential nominating convention made 11th-hour changes to the party platform to reinstate a reference to God and a declaration that "undivided" Jerusalem is Israel's capital.

There was widespread booing on the floor of the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte as Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa led delegates in three voice votes that sounded, at best, equally divided on whether to restore language from the party's 2008 document.

Hardly primetime news but some minor media outlets are paying attention.
