Dr. Walter E. Williams is one the smartest, most interesting men in America alive today.  Hands down.  He is a professor of economics at George Mason University, the author of a syndicated weekly column, and probably best known as a frequent (and outstanding) guest-host on The Rush Limbaugh Show.

Oh, and we had him on my podcast this week!

Here's more of Dr. Williams impressive bio (from his website):

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Walter E. Williams holds a B.A. in economics from California State University, Los Angeles, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in economics from UCLA. He also holds a Doctor of Humane Letters from Virginia Union University and Grove City College, Doctor of Laws from Washington and Jefferson College and Doctor Honoris Causa en Ciencias Sociales from Universidad Francisco Marroquin, in Guatemala, where he is also Professor Honorario.

Dr. Williams has served on the faculty of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, as John M. Olin Distinguished Professor of Economics, since 1980; from 1995 to 2001, he served as department chairman. He has also served on the faculties of Los Angeles City College, California State University Los Angeles, and Temple University in Philadelphia, and Grove City College, Grove City, Pa.

We could not have been more thrilled to speak to Professor Williams, and I know you're going to enjoy my conversation with him.

Don't forget to check out his latest book, Race And Economics!!!

Ha!  I just happened to have bugged Dr. Williams enough over the past 3-4 years with various economics-related questions (via email) that when he heard I blog/podcast for AEI now, he was actually willing to come on.  Huge thrill!  Hope you enjoy it.  Sound quality could be better, but we're still learning how to make all of this happen.  I need my own Blue Yetti!  Guy's a podcasting master!

As part of a college term paper many years ago, I wrote to Dr. Williams asking a question.  He responded quickly, thoroughly, and graciously.  I still have his response, framed of course.

You need to add more breadth to your interviewee list. Interview a dullard some time, I'd never let you down!

I hope that all Ricochet members are aware of your Voice in the Wilderness podcasts Your conversations with Peter Robinson,  Rob Long, Victor David Hanson and Marvin Olasky (and others) are not to be missed.  I am personally grateful to these luminaries for their generosity in supporting a young conservative voice to build an audience in your generation.

Fantastic.  I saw Dr. Williams give a talk when I was in college. This was in the mid-90s'. It changed my life.

Thanks for the kind words, Pilgrim.  These people I've had the privilege to interview have been painfully kind with their time.  They set a high standard for the next generation.

Don't you wish more Americans (even conservatives) knew him and his work?  He's a "game-changer" kind of guy.

The vast majority of my economics knowledge comes from listening to and reading the words of Dr. Williams and Thomas Sowell.

I mentioned before that you were my hero. I need to come up with another honorific for you.  Well done.  Very well done.  I was just looking for a podcast to listen to as I did some work and your post was like a light in the dark.

Thanks, Lance!  I figure if people enjoy these interviews 1/10 as much as I do conducting them, it's worth posting them.

Wow (again), R.J. I absolutely love this man. Here's my favorite joke/story (he's an expert on this silly kind) from the beloved Walter Williams:

When he was first substituting for Rush -- first or second time -- he talked about traveling to New York to do the show and he said that his wife won't accompany him to New York any more. Paraphrase because of imperfect memory: "You know why? It's because of the women here." He paused for a bit, making me wonder "What in the world?" and then completed the thought: "You see, it's because all these women here are treating her bad and talking her down and then asking 'Why does she get him? What's so special about her that she's married to him?' "

He starts off talking about his wife and then zing he's back on how wonderful he is. One can only wonder -- what must it be like to be married to him? Does she just roll her eyes? Really, though, she must be something special.

You can see why Professor Williams and Rush are sympatico -- they both love that braggadocio type of humor. (Who doesn't?)

Larry, I love Dr. Williams and always got a kick out of the wife jokes.  He has a great delivery and could pull them off, even though they are on the corny side.  I never found them to be chauvanistic, maybe because he spoke so highly of his mother & I got the sense he and his wife just loved winding each other up.
