Amen
It's more tempting than ever to convert to catholicism these days.

Thanx Joe. And I know what R Craigen is feeling.
Re: Viral Homilies: One More Thing The Obama Administration Must Contend With
NOW IS THE TIME! Best way to convert is to start watching The World Over with Raymond Arroyo on EWTN. It's the Catholic O'Reilly Factor. Then start watching the rest of EWTN's schedule. It's like the Catholic SCTV, but in a holy way.

And if you don't have TV/cable, like me and approximately 7 other people in the US (they all might live in my house), then you should read the National Catholic Register, which you can find online as well. They have great news, interesting blogs, and other good stuff. During Lent, I am giving up Ricochet except for Sundays. But NC Register is good for my soul...
ps -- R. Craigen -- nice new avatar photo!

I did not expect a priest to directly address those parishoners who voted for Obama and basically ask them, "What were you thinking?" That's bravery. Or tremendous effrontery, depending on your perspective.

Hysterical article, Mama T.
It also explains why a fair number of non-Catholics go weird during Lent.

Thanks, Midget fellow non-mammal. Simcha Fisher is my hero.

Obama's political ineptness know no bounds. Does he fathom the size of his political mistake? It takes colossal ignorance and antipathy to generate this kind of response from across the board with the American bishopric.

I'm not about to become a Catholic - the good Father is shocked, shocked that Mr Obama is a Socialist and makes promises that he doesn't keep.
Was he not paying attention in 2008?
Or simply Naive?
Well, I think Prof Rahe has already answered that in his famous post.

As an old school Presbyterian, I feel nothing buy sympathy and appreciation for the Catholic Church in this circumstance, but I thought we had all the fire-breathers and pulpit pounders.;-)
It's ironic, sad, funny (depending on how you view it) that liberal/progressives have finally found a way to overcome religious animus between Catholic, Protestant, and Jew alike. Situations like these cause those who are both conservative and religious to feel more sympathy with each other than with the secular humanists whatever religious label they give themselves.

That was great. Thanks for posting, Joe. This morning at my church the bishop said Mass, and he spoke quite frankly about both religious liberty and contraception. I've never heard a homily like that before, and I found it so refreshing.

You don't have to be planning to convert to listen carefully -- he is not "shocked" -- he is angry. He was not an Obama supporter, but he is upset with those of his congregation who are supporters. He is neither naive nor clueless.

I sometimes sit behind her in Mass. :) She belongs to the parish in New Hampshire where I was married.

Speaking of Simcha Fisher, a timely column:

Even in his anger, Fr. Maletta displays an amazing degree of naivete. Can he actually believe that the administration gives a damn about the actual poor? And does he actually believe that taking government money is without strings?
Sadly, the Catholic church and especially American bishops are complicit in bringing this upon us all. They are not alone with this guilt, but they stand apart in their willingness to embrace progressivism.

They're a special case. It's their job to give people the benefit of the doubt, even when they don't really deserve it. It's only when you put it right in their face that they have to stop expecting the rare miracle of Democrat good faith.

Kudos to Fr. Maletta. The sleeping giant is finally awakening. It is long overdue. Make no mistake, the mask is off of Mr. Obama and now the Bishops know who and what they are dealing with. In Cardinal Dolan's words, "We did not ask for this fight, but we will not run from it."

What is most impressive is how he goes so far as to make the connection between this issue and socialism.

Re: Viral Homilies: One More Thing The Obama Administration Must Contend With
It appears that the Catholic church is starting to grow a spine. I'm glad they understand, and are starting to say, that Socialism is evil. This kind of message is helpful in beginning to turn those little old ladies in the pews who think that "nice Mr. Obama" is just trying to save America and keeps being savaged by those "mean Republicans" (as they are regularly reminded by "nice and reasonable" Mr. Gibson/Mr. Williams/Mr. Pelley). They may not be ready to vote for us yet, but they won't vote for Obama either, and that's a start.
