That's what I'm hearing from everyone I speak to in Turkey. For those of you who are puzzled, Turks have a little trouble with the difference between the v-sound and the w-sound, and that long e isn't so easy for them, either.

This article in Hurriyet is dead-on accurate. This is exactly what I'm hearing:

“Should I believe this is a great success of the Internet [era], or have the documents been revealed on the U.S.’s instructions? Would the U.S. otherwise tolerate being disgraced in such a manner? I frankly do not know what to believe,” 55-year-old Hasan Aksoy, an auditor, told the Daily News in Taksim on Monday.

Opinions among people on the streets diverged on the possible effects the leaked documents will have.

“The leaked documents have revealed shocking claims that might even give way to the resignation of the present Turkish government, although the prime minister ignores them,” Tezcan Saz, a 32-year-old lawyer, told the Daily News while riding the metro between Levent and Taksim. Saz said the documents were proof that the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, government had shifted Turkey’s axis toward the East and that it was a pro-Islamic party, adding that the documents were a “pure reflection of Turkey’s reality,” which he found confusing.

Everywhere I go, people are talking about it and asking me about it. "You're American, you're a journalist--are these real?"  By the way, I just heard the prime minister has threatened to resign if the reports of his eight secret Swiss bank accounts are proven true. Don't know yet if he really said it; just something I heard. (I wonder if he'd get technical about it: Would he resign if they only found seven? )

I'm enjoying imagining the world's confusion when we give Assange the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Actually, I probably shouldn't even joke about that. Poor Turkey is already sufficiently confused by this. That was a joke, Turkish friends! Yok yok şaka söylüyorum, tabii ki!

UPDATE: From the Istanbullian

Neither Barack Obama nor Mahmoud Ahmadinejad threatened Julian Assange yet, but Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan is the only one of his kind.

Responding to the WikiLeaks' Cablegate allegations that he has got eight bank accounts in SwitzerlandErdogan has reacted with his usual temper today.

"Don't forget that the person who once alleged that I have one billion dollars is in jail as an Ergenekon suspect now," Erdogan kindly reminded us.

Stay classy, Tayyip!

All the way to the top and all the way to the bottom and every angle to the side.

Isn't it interesting how, in these closed societies where you have alot of conspiricy and double-dealing, conspiracy theories run wild and in the US where we have this "excessive" openess a massive airing of embarassasing details is greeted with a yawn and sense of "is that all there is" I guess a woman who drops her burka for a one piece bathing suit is more shocking than a stripper who drops a pasty now and then.
