Sierras

Greetings from a fishing vacation high in the Sierras, where my children and I have already spent several days stimulating the economy—just yesterday I spent more than thirty bucks on sinkers and earthworms, and then, after several hours during which none of us got so much as a nibble, another ten bucks on jigs—while catching so few fish—our tally so far, to be excruciatingly honest, stands at exactly zero—that we’re doing no conceivable harm to the environment.

This hardly rises to the level of a witty or provocative Ricochet post, I recognize. But during the only few days of my entire life of which the Obama White House would heartily approve, I want credit.

I'm sure the mere fact of your human presence in such a pristine environment creates untold stress for the wildlife and vegetation. Credit denied.

Plus you're trying to be cruel to animals, although you are failing.

Blame Obama.

Surely you can't fail to catch fish on your own. Someone has to share and make the failure possible with you.

And the buck stops...

You probably have been catching fish for hours, but they are fish with weak jaws and you're yanking the rod. Rest assured, Peter, that ecosystem will not soon recover from the Robinson Massacre of '012.

Permit me to propose that you 'cast your nets on the other side', and trade in your worms, jigs, etc. for an inexpensive, light-weight fly rod and set about catching some trout the 'right' way!

Enjoy the time you have left, and, should you heed this advice and catch a fish with your fly, I will predict that (with more certainty than the coming election), you will never go back to worms!

Peter,

You are on vacation with your family, for God's sake please step away from the computer and enjoy nature without the wireless.

Or take an ipad which makes posting almost impossible. Enjoy the parks while they're open. That 56 million wasn't saved by you, it was some government program designed to steal from you .

Lo the Fisherman

He riseth early in the morning and departs

And when he returneth

He smelleth strongly of drink

And the truth is not in him.

Take up fly fishing, Peter. It's more elegant and relaxing in my experience.

Also, Lefty Kreh is a much better teacher than the Department of the Interior.

You are contributing to the green economy:  I am, in fact, green with envy.

Those tackle shops are run by entrepreneurs.

Talk to them.  They will know if the temperatures are driving the fish deep, or other local factors.

Also, don't ignore the significance of the Solunar theory and how that may impact your outings.

As an example (for your approximate area), tonight should have great fishing, for an hour or two around 10:30 pm.  That should be when the Moon is the closest to directly overhead.  You'll also have minor peaks in activity around 6:25 pm, when the Moon rises, and 3:34 am tomorrow, when it sets.  Wherever you are, the two peaks for fishing activity are when the Moon is directly overhead and when it is directly beneath your feet.  So @ 10:30 this morning should also have been good.  Tomorrow, the Moon will be directly beneath your feet @ 11 am, so that may be a more civilized time to fish, after getting some local knowledge from the tackle shop about the depths to target your bait, based upon current water temperature.

Best of luck!

I cetainly hope those were NOT lead sinkers you were using? I jest. Actually the Greens have already started a campaign to ban any use of lead (Pb) for both fishing & hunting. If they get that done, next they'll want to ban hooks of any metallic substances - you'll have to fashion your fishing hooks from bits of bone. Then they'll want to outlaw any type of synthetic fishing line..............

One question: NorCal, or SoCal Sierras? Because up here in the NorCal Sierras is a delight.

But those sinkers and and jigs used to have a lot of lead in them (well, at least back in the 70s when I was a kid) - so with so many now tangled on the bottom, snagged in rocks and old tree trunks, I'm sure someone would point out the harm to the eco system....

This in no way brands them as 'greenies' in the political sense; just careful and considerate of others, of the fish and birdlife that they may otherwise, needlessly harm.

All the fishermen I know are meticulously careful not to leave hooks or filament in the stream, and never to use lead in their weighted flies.

Two bits of advice, Peter:

1) If they won't bite on worms or jigs, the only other choice is to annoy them with buzz baits until they strike out of sheer irritation.  Bass will strike a properly applied buzz bait just to make it stop rattling.

2) Never fish in the middle of the day.  Early morning is usually best, but right at dusk can be decent too, especially if it's hot.  Fish are like southern Europeans, they prefer to sleep or otherwise be still during the heat of the day.

If you should encounter a Greenie at any point in your day, it is essential that you flog them with your fishing pole until they emit a high pitched squeal and retreat to their Prius.

We cannot have the Greens out there mucking about in nature all willy nilly.  God only know what kinds of endangered bugs or other critters they might find.

Not so fast there, Ecowarrior - Any of those sinkers made of lead?

I thought so.
