Mia Love

Here's an interesting congressional race that shows the GOP really is color blind.  Ms Love beat out two white males for the nomination.  Here's hoping Mitt's coattails in Utah give us the first black female GOP congressman.  From Politico;

"The most interesting news from the Utah GOP convention was the nomination of Mia Love, the Saratoga Springs mayor who pulled an upset to claim the GOP nod in the state’s new 4th District.  The daughter of Haitian immigrants, the pro-gun, pro-life conservative would be the lone black Republican woman in Congress if she won. She’s got a good chance of winning, too: Love will have an experienced opponent in Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson but the seat is heavily Republican -- and Utah favorite Mitt Romney will be heading the GOP ticket."

That's great but it won't impress anyone on the left. Can we stop hoping they will come around and just beat them?

I'm not concerned with impressing the Left, I posted this because it's just one more example of how the GOP is concerned about ideology and not race.  We nominate conservatives regardless of race, gender or religion.

If Mia Love wins, she'll be my congresswoman.  I've heard her speak and debate. She's the real deal.  Her biggest problem is that she's running against one of the last Blue Dog democrats.  But she has the best shot in years of beating him. I'll be volunteering for her campaign.

Oh, watching the CBC grit their teeth if she wins will be so much fun.  :)

I'm thinking of doing that too.  There are lots of good black people in red states (the "sellouts" urban blacks hate so much) and we should do everything we can to promote them.  The more family values blacks in Congress, the better off society will be.

From her website, on immigration:

Protect our borders and remove the magnets.  Only after we have plugged the hole in the boat can we begin to deal with the water in it.

That's a great line!  Someone should send it to the Romney campaign; it's much better than our current messaging strategy on the issue.

Speaking of Romney, Josh Romney, one of Mitt's sons who lives in Utah, publicly endorsed Love before the convention, where she received 70 percent and thus avoided a primary.  His endorsement didn't hurt, but I think she would have easily hit the 60 percent mark (the magic level that allows you to avoid a primary) without it.

Wait a minute.  Aren't "pro-gun, pro-life conservative" people supposed to be backward and bigoted?  The media watchdogs wouldn't mislead us, would they?

2012 Utah Republican Nominating Convention - Mia Love

Isn't that a catchy name for a politician?

her speech...

with intro by Joshua Romney, son of Mitt.

Will 2012 be a rerun of 2010?

She's on fire in her speech!

Except, I really wish that politicians would stop using that "definition of insanity" line. Jonah Goldberg wrote about this the other day, actually, but it's something that's bugged me for a long time. Jonah wrote that actually, doing the same thing over and over again is called...practice.

tabula,  please keep us informed.  The media might, or might not, focus on this contest.  If they do not,  the news will not reach us here.

I expect the hate machine will go into high gear,  if only because liberals are unable to control themselves.

Have they given her a song and a poem yet?  What pejorative rhymes with Love?

Those counties in the southwestern corner of Utah voted about 75% for John McCain.

(This should be a bit easier than when Star Parker lost by 45 points in her Congressional race in 2010 which was actually a decent result considering that the Democrat usually wins with about 75% to 85% of the vote.)

I'll keep you informed.  Would love to see some polling, but we're unlikely to see anything for a while.  I'm intrigued how the Dems will approach this election:  Mia presents major problems for them.
