Update 1: The New York Times reports  that an Islamist terror group has come forward to claim responsibility for the Oslo bombing:

Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami, or the Helpers of the Global Jihad, issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, according to Will McCants, a terrorism analyst at C.N.A., a research institute that studies terrorism. The message said the attack was a response to Norwegian forces’ presence in Afghanistan and to unspecified insults to the Prophet Muhammad. “We have warned since the Stockholm raid of more operations,” the group said, according to Mr. McCants’ translation, apparently referring to a bombing in Sweden in December 2010. “What you see is only the beginning, and there is more to come.” The claim could not be confirmed. It is not uncommon for terrorist groups to advance claims of responsibility for high-profile attacks, only to have the claims prove to be spurious.

Update 2: A man dressed in a policeman's uniform opened fire on a youth camp on the island of Utoya, 50 miles south of Oslo.  Police have confirmed 9 dead on the island, but eyewitnesses report seeing 25 to 30 dead bodies on the shore and in the water.  According to reports, the gunman was “tall, blonde and [of] Nordic looks."

What manner of coward shoots at children.  Absolutely shameful.

Mollie Hemingway, Ed.

The shooter has been identified as Anders Behring Breivik. Here's a link to his FB profile.

He self-identifies as Christian, conservative and he lists William James, On Liberty, 1984, The Trial, War and Peace, The Iliad and The Odyssey, Critique of Pure Reason, The Prince, Wealth of Nations, An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, Leviathan, The Divine Comedy and The Republic as his favorite books.

I read that he's a Nationalist, too.

Fascinating.  I wonder what manifesto he will put forward to "justify" his actions.

Fascinating, too, that a Muslim extremist group stepped forward to take "credit" for those actions.

Have the Norwegian authorities established that the bomber and the shooter are the same person, or are these two unrelated attacks?

And now the BBC is reporting that the death toll at the summer camp is a staggering eighty.

They say he performed both acts.

And the death toll on the island right now stands at 80. Eighty! It's unfathomable. I don't understand.

Apparently also active in the World of Warcraft community and is a Masonic Lodge member (therefore, definitely not a conventional Christian) if I understand the translations of the Norwegian newspapers correctly.

He had them on an island and had a Glock, a rifle, and lots of ammo. An Island to himself where he could hunt unarmed men, women and children.

This sounds impossible to me, eighty, I mean. Especially as the victims were not trapped in a building like the victims of Nidal Hasan or Martin Bryant. The BBC story says the killer had a handgun, a shotgun and an 'automatic weapon'.  No doubt the poodle media will turn this into a story about the evil of firearms rather than the evil of Islam.

I remember the media had a fit of the vapors that a weapon as horrific as Nidal Hasan's Five-seveN was available for purchase.  Surely, I'm not the only person who thought the death toll could have been worse if Hasan had been intelligent enough to buy a decent gun.

He used the uniform as the perfect disguise. His prey would gather around him for protection and he would... what a monster.

Curiouser his facebook profile is only a week old. He also held contradictory statements such as he was anti-islam yet he criticized the EDL for being to aggressive.

I fear a terrible hammer is going to be used against us.Call your reps and move to protect our 2nd amendment rights before we are disarmed and made helpless before the foreign maruaders armed by our gov't come.
