This afternoon marks the conclusion of Wisconsin's high stakes judicial election.  Incumbent David Prosser has just emerged as the victor:

State Supreme Court Justice David Prosser emerged as the winner Friday over challenger JoAnne Kloppenburg in a heated election that drew national attention because of the fight over collective bargaining and a ballot reporting error in Waukesha County, following initial results that showed Kloppenburg leading the race.

A canvass of vote totals from the state's 72 counties finalized Friday afternoon shows Prosser beating Kloppenburg, an assistant attorney general, by 7,316 votes. The final canvass of the April 5 vote was completed 10 days after the election, the maximum allowed by state law.

The margin - 0.488% - is within the 0.5% limit that would allow Kloppenburg to request a statewide recount at taxpayers' expense.

The deadline for calling for a recount is 5 p.m. Wednesday. Although counties have certified their results, by law the Government Accountability Board can't certify the statewide results and declare an official winner until after that recount deadline passes or after completion of a recount, the state agency noted.

The Kloppenburg campaign has not decided whether to seek a recount, but it wasn't conceding the race, either.

Let us pause to contemplate the full meaning of this.

Wisconsin.  Lavender, in the best of years, and Dubya never carried it.  Off-season election, when activists rule.  Who was more activated than the vaunted Union-Moonbat Axis?  And (Price Is Right fail music, sorry Pat), they came up short.  Rather substantially.

This puts a Peter-esque spring in my step for budgetary matters on a national scale.  If they can't beat us there, they can't beat us anywhere.  We got the world on a string, sittin on a rainbow ...

For once can a Democrat just concede and NOT drag it out?  We are talking about over 7,000 votes here.

For her to declare victory ("we did win" - thanks for the link Kenneth) when the 'lead' was 204 votes, but then demand a recount when  Prosser's lead is 7,316 votes would be pretty rich.

Any news on where the Kloppenberg camp is headed with this?  She's a Democrat, so my prediction is that she will demand a recount.  Even if they know they'll still lose, and the only things gained are more acrimony and tarnishing Prosser's victory, that's enough reason for them.

Wouldn't a recount invite scruitiny of where and how Kloppenberg got her votes?

Is she that dumb?

Maybee. Liberals believe rules only apply to the bad guys.

Forget Kloppenberg's statement.

What is Rachel Maddow saying?

"An historic, epochal defeat for progressivism, public sector unionism and the Democrat Party, one which signals a sea-change in American politics that will reverberate throughout the nation and into 2012."

No, Rachel didn't say that.

That was your pal Freesmith.

Elect no Democrat anywhere, ever. Doesn't it feel good every time a Democrat loses?

I gotta say, if I were inclined to believe in divine providence, the moment those 7k vote showed up would certainly have qualified.

It would be nice to have the big guns on our side for a change.

But even if it was just blind stumbling luck, I'll take it.

When the games are as close as this, a win is a win.

Warmest congratulations to everyone in Wisconsin who participated.

Paul A. Rahe

If we can win in Wisconsin and then withstand the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, we can win damned near anywhere. Scott Walker needs to usher through the legislature a Voter Integrity Law putting an end to registration on election day and requiring photo identification.

Those of you who live in California, Massachusetts, and New York should take heart. What you need is a Scott Walker or a Chris Christie, willing and able to make the argument. Lukewarm, half-hearted Republican candidates are bound to lose -- if not on election day, then later.

Let me add that it is better to lose with a candidate who makes the argument (remember Barry Goldwater) than with a timid candidate who runs away. Goldwater's loss paved the way for Ronald Reagan when the former's argument proved to be sound in a variety of ways. Politics is about public sentiment, first and foremost.

I know this was talked about, but did the WI senate pass photo ID requirements when the dems went fleebaggin'?  If not, that was a huge wasted opportunity.  It would've really brought consequences to bear for the dems' actions and say in a way: "okay, you want to flee the state? Well, while you are gone, we are going to pass every wet dream conservative piece of legislature that's ever been contemplated and wouldn't have a chance of getting through were you here."  Dare to dream, I guess.
