Understanding How to Embed Links
I've noticed that many members of Ricochet don't embed their links, and I wonder if that's because they don't know how. If so, don't be embarrassed: I still don't know what the button on the far-right does, and I don't recommend you press it, because I just tried and it made my text disappear.
However, for those of you who'd like to embed your links--which will make your posts look cleaner and meaner--here's how you do it. Mouse over the text you'd like to embed, then look up: See that button, fifth from the right, that looks like a little paper clip? Press it. A window will open asking you for the address. You enter it, press OK, and there you go--you've embedded your link.
The fourth button from the right lets you upload photos, which I strongly encourage you to do, because everyone likes photos. The third from the right is for embedding YouTube videos. Same process. I don't know what the second-from-the-right does and I'm afraid to try it.
The sixth-from-the-right is for indenting quotes. Try it, you'll like it.
All of the buttons on the left, I think, are fairly self-explanatory: bold, italic, underline. I can't think of a single good reason to underline anything, though; it just looks ugly.
Then--moving rightward--you've got your bullet points, your numbered lists, and I'm not sure about the ones in the middle.
That thing on the left that says "Paragraph?" I wouldn't bother with it. I'm not sure what it's for and I've never had good results with it.
Good luck! Don't be afraid to ask if you have any questions. I'm sure someone here has the answer, even if I don't.

Re: Understanding How to Embed Links
I'm fairly certain that the dashboard of your everyday average run-of-the-mill member is slightly different. For me, the "insert/edit link" button [that's the screen tip given on a mouse-over] looks like a three-chain link and is the ninth button from the left. I don't even have a button that's labeled "paragraph".
But, yeah, point well taken; people who make comments should be doing this.

I don't even know what you mean by "mouse over". Do you mean hover? Or select text? I can't get anything to happen.

Oh, yes, I see your point. I've probably added to the confusion now. Okay, third button from the right to embed.
Re: Understanding How to Embed Links
Select text. As if you were going to italicize it.

Yeah, I wonder if perhaps the tools are represented differently depending on which browser, perhaps even operating system. My icon is also a 3 link chain, not a paperclip, but paperclip seems to make sense as well, as in "attach".

Re: Understanding How to Embed Links
I don't think the common riff-raff get to embed videos--just links, like this:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mp4EdNUQaPc
Or, maybe I'm just missing something.

Thanks Claire! You've made me so happy that I'm going to embed a link right now.

Re: Understanding How to Embed Links
I really can't take any more of this horrible pressure to conform to your so-called 'standards'. Between that and the shameless capitalism, and the naked consumerism, and the price-gouging, I just might have to think about the possibility of perhaps pondering the feasibility of mulling over a decision to maybe do something about it. Like occupy Rob's front lawn.
Meanwhile, here's a picture:

Re: Understanding How to Embed Links
Sure, mouse hover! I like the sound of that better. I just used "mouse-over" because it's the particular wording used in Microsoft PowerPoint if you were to embed a sound effect button and wish to have it play upon "mouse-over" or when the selected slide begins.

Re: Understanding How to Embed Links
What surprises me is how rarely people take advantage of the basic text formatting options. After all, using bold or italic formatting is entirely legitimate (unlike emoticons).

You can't add youtube videos to comments, however you can if you post a conversation

Ok, I'm trying to figure out how to get the text to appear next to a picture, rather than below it.
Still trying. <sigh>

Thank you Claire. A member post yesterday complained about mine, and others, faceless Avatar. OK, because of your lesson today, this is my new avatar, Severely Ltd. Enjoy

So when you click on that photo icon, you see it gives you options for size and alignment? You must pick left or right alignment if you want the text to wrap around.

Here is a recent picture of my son Max who used to go to Colorado State University, my fiance Mary Ellen who works for a startup company, and my son Cory, who goes to Washington State University. As Albert Einstein once said:
PS I am now following the Mises Institute thanks to Claire!
Thanks, PJM

Claire - you're so sweet to give us a tutorial! I admit to being too intimidated to try anything fancy for fear of embarrassing myself. But in the spirit of trying something new, here's a picture of our dog, Grady.
"Leave it. Leeeeeeave it! Good boy."

Re: Understanding How to Embed Links
One of the things that I am still waiting for are any toolbar options when I post something from my iPad (in either the full site or the mobile site)...
All I can do is type straight text...no links, quotes, or pics...
