Re: Uncommon Knowledge with Peter Robinson: Michael Barone
Congratulations on recording this interview when your were in DC Peter. It was refreshing to see an analytical dissection of this year's political season seen through the filter of his mastery of past electoral cycles. I wish our opposition would be patient enough to listen to all your Uncommon Knowledge interviews, but this one especially. They could learn so much.

Thanks! Michael's a wonder, isn't he?

Re: Uncommon Knowledge with Peter Robinson: Michael Barone
He is great- I loved hearing about the 1924 convention. Unfortunately, the audio RSS feed is 18 minutes long, so that's all I heard. That kind of thing seems to happen a lot to the RSS feed.

Reload the feed, the full episode is now there. We recently switched to a different hosting provider for the podcast version of the show and the changeover has been a bit bumpier than we had hoped. It should all be working smoothly by the next show.

Re: Uncommon Knowledge with Peter Robinson: Michael Barone
He is a walking, talking political almanac.. Fabulous to hear people who know their stuff and can add the historical dimension to the story. As Thomas Sowell said the other day on the podcast re intellectuals '..it would never occur to them that they they know nothing about what they are talking about.' Barone is a delight to listen to and watch.
Love Uncommon Knowledge.
Good work, Peter.

Without the Blue Yeti and the BSA, life itself would be impossible.

Re: Uncommon Knowledge with Peter Robinson: Michael Barone
Mr. Barone reminded me that the supreme demands of the position, joined with the two-year slough of the campaign pageantry, deters all but the most ambitious men and women from seeking the presidency. (Aside: all the more reason to zealously guard the separation of powers and to recall Madison's words in Federalist 51 that "ambition must be made to check ambition.") And then I despaired that a man like Mr. Barone will never, for that reason alone, ascend to the office.
But then how does one possibly check such unrivaled ambition? Only by clipping the wings of an increasingly imperial presidency. Though a convention in the style of 1924 might be possible, even desirable, I doubt we will ever receive another Coolidge.

Beautifully stated, Jordan--and here's my favorite Coolidge quotation:

Peter Robinson
Here's my favorite Coolidge quotation:
I recall an anecdote about Coolidge: that he was the last president who personally answered and greeted callers at the front door of the White House. Apocryphal? Perhaps. But nothing else quite illustrates Coolidge's "not a great man" theory and his humble self-awareness.

Peter, you need to do more UKs with that guy. Maybe once every two months or something.

Re: Uncommon Knowledge with Peter Robinson: Michael Barone
Michael Barone is a sagacious fellow, and he doesn't let his laudable center-right dedication cloud his sharp perception. So I must accept his assessment of Romney. I do not like the fellow at all, but he may well be the only Obama-stopper we have.
His awareness that we shall choose between Tocqueville's America and Tocqueville's France is spot on. (Thank you, Professor Rahe, for recommending Tocqueville's Ancien Regime and the French Revolution. It was very instructive.)

Re: Uncommon Knowledge with Peter Robinson: Michael Barone
I wish that Michael did a stream-of-consciousness podcast every week. And his point about framing the issue is exactly the key point regarding immigration, taxes, government coercion of religious institutions with no conscience exception, etc.
In the Fluke Flack, there were two choices: 1) access to contraceptives, and 2) forcing other parties to pay for your preferred choice of contraceptives. It is so important that candidates be disciplined in answering #2, not #1.

Does anyone else have an issue with the volume of this video? They might as well be whispering.
Re: Uncommon Knowledge with Peter Robinson: Michael Barone
Aaron,
Make sure you have the volume control on the YouTube player turned up as well as your system volume.

I listen to all podcasts on my phone. The audio on this one was much lower in volume than the standard Ricochet fare.

Well, it was recorded in a hotel room with a different crew than we normally use, but that shouldn't make a difference. I'll look into it.

Marvelous, Peter, simply marvelous. Instructive throughout.
