Sarkozy

Nicolas Sarkozy is that rarest of things: a French president for whom I can find a few kind words to say. Thus, I'm often inclined to dismiss some of his more questionable pronouncements as symptomatic of inherently Gallic pathologies that a conservative American shouldn't expect to see rectified anytime soon. His latest cri de coeur on the Middle East, however, wanders considerably too far of the mark to be left unaddressed. Per the Washington Times:

Mr. Sarkozy said that “each of us knows that Palestine cannot immediately obtain full and complete recognition of the status of United Nations member state,” but he expressed concerns that a Security Council veto “risks engendering a cycle of violence in the Middle East.”

"Risks"? With all due respect, Monsieur le President, fire your briefers. That cycle of violence has been with us for 63 years now. The greater 'risk' may be assuming that it can be solved on parchment.

Actually lack of a Security Council veto would pose a greater risk, because it is a dead game certainty that Israel will defend herself no matter what, while the Palestinians are likely to be slightly less confidently aggressive if they don't have a UNGA statehood resolution in hand to wave around.

Isn't that picture a Ricochet CoC violation?

I am pretty sure Sarkozy is thinking more of preventing the cycle of violence in the majority-Muslim neighborhoods of France.

Actually, I like,

"... each of us knows that Palestine cannot immediately obtain full and complete recognition of the status of United Nations member state...".

I mean, you don't usually get nearly that far with Eurolefties, or even guys like Sarko who pass for their conservative wing.

Good for him.

The great risk is that the U.N. Security Council might veto Palestinian nationhood.

Er, what's that? Oh, the subject of Palestinian nationalism is verboten. But why?

If the nationalist aspirations of the Palestinians were recognized then the Israelis and the Arab countries might be expected to cede land.

What's that? The neighboring Arab countries aren't on board? Oh.

I meant statehood, statehood... of course.

We can't have "Palestinian refugees" making nationalist claims to any land in the Arab countries where they reside.

They are a separate people, with the right of self-determination and their own soil, which should be taken from Jews, not Arabs. Obviously.

Shorter Sarkozy: We are being held hostage and we don't want you to make them mad.
