Two Truly Chilling Sentences About Jon Huntsman
From Daniel Drezner's blog at ForeignPolicy.com:
... I'd expect decent odds that Huntsman would be the secretary of state in any incoming GOP administration (quick, name me an alternate candidate with sufficient gravitas). Even if he's a sideshow to the current GOP nomination, he wouldn't be if a Republican won in 2012.
Personally, I want no business with any potential Republican president willing to install Huntsman at Foggy Bottom (the first rule of effectively managing the State Department is not to do it with a company man). But I turn it over to you, the Ricochetoise. Who should be the next GOP president's pick to represent America abroad?

John Bolton.

Re: Two Truly Chilling Sentences About Jon Huntsman
I'm going to concur with those saying John Bolton, especially as I can see him as a man willing to uproot some of the subversive elements within the State Department that often worked counter to President George W. Bush.

Re: Two Truly Chilling Sentences About Jon Huntsman
I'm not sure that representing America abroad should be the core job assignment. Perhaps representing America in the State Department should be the focus. Perhaps we need someone who will break some china here at home. Might be a core element of the job description for all cabinet appointments.

Mayor McCheese. He's well qualified for the job and needs a gig. Dick Cheney with a shotgun would be my second choice.

Bolton was my first thought, Giuliani my second. I prefer the latter.

Anyone willing to destroy State from the inside. Huntsman definitely isn't that guy.

Re: Two Truly Chilling Sentences About Jon Huntsman
I'm definitely with the Bolton group, but Charles Mark's suggestion of Giuliani has merit. I'd be happy with either.

Re: Two Truly Chilling Sentences About Jon Huntsman
I've thought Giuliani is the perfect man for the job for a long time. Someone who would not only direct foreign policy, but would also be able to clear out the beauracracy as well.
With Bolton as his deputy of course.

Giuliani would also make a great Attorney General. He'd certainly be an improvement over the current occupant of the office.

What about Santorum as AG?
Hell, as long as we're playing pretend:
Giuliani at State
Palin at Energy
Bachmann at Education (until it's eliminated)
Romney at Treasury...
Re: Two Truly Chilling Sentences About Jon Huntsman
I'd suggest someone who understands that Iran isn't an existential threat to the United States, that the Iraq War was a mistake, that the problem in Libya is that we intervened at all, not that we didn't intervene forcefully enough... it would also be nice to have someone who wasn't focused like a laser on Israel or the Middle East generally, since China and Russia are both more important.
As far as I can tell, conservatives like John Bolton because of his bellicose rhetoric and the fact that he drives liberals crazy.

Re: Two Truly Chilling Sentences About Jon Huntsman
What are the most disruptive events with immediate risk that could occur overseas?
- Middle East oil embargo (not likely anywhere else).
- War in the Middle East (not likely anywhere else).
- European financial meltdown.
- Asian financial meltdown (less likely, less impact than in Europe).
The least disruptive?
- A strike by Foreign Service Officers.
Bolton.

Bolton, definitely. Or maybe we could get an encore from Mr. Rumsfeld?

Ooooooh, Rudy as AG. Nice! Here's my Dream Team from a few months ago, which includes Bolton at State. I'd make a few changes, but not many.

Re: Two Truly Chilling Sentences About Jon Huntsman
That’s just a very pleasing bonus. We like him because he understands the importance of maintaining/defending our sovereignty against the Left-Liberal instinct to hand it over to others, such as incoherent and dangerous international organizations.
For the record, all wars are the result of a choice. Nations can enjoy the absence of war anytime they like. They need merely to submit to force or the threat of force and accept a more stunted, un-free life.
