My family and I just returned from church, where the service ended with "Battle Hymn of the Republic."

It reminded me of two great moments during the aftermath of 9/11.  One was the prayer service on September 14, when Democratic and Republican leaders joined to sing the great song.

Another was organized by Speaker Dennis Hastert.  While the fire still burned at the Pentagon, while I'm sure Capitol police and Secret Service agents pleaded with him to get to a secure location, he organized a show of unity on the Capitol steps.  Here, Democrats and Republicans sing "America the Beautiful."

Mark Steyn rightly commented at the time on two little things that meant a lot:  firstly, the Star Spangled Banner was played at the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace, at the Queen's request (the only occasion on which another national anthem had been played).  Secondly, at the London memorial service, she had joined in the Star Spangled Banner - again, the first time she had sung anyone's national anthem (she could hardly sing ours, after all!) since at least the 1950s, if not ever.  She expressed the deep solidarity many of us felt (and still feel) with our brethren across the Atlantic.

It may not seem a big thing to you.  But it was.

Mr. Dammers:  Thanks!  That warms my heart.  It reminds me of Bush's speech before Congress, where he said directly to Tony Blair, "Thanks, friend."  I didn't know about the Queen singing the Star Spangled Banner.  Wow.  Britain was a good friend.

I guess she didn't sing the third stanza, though!

Our town memorial service was held in my church and the organist played The Battle Hymn of the Republic as we exited.

Not one, but two "God songs" by Congressional leaders.  My, times have changed.
