Three Coins

Hey, it's the first Goldberg, Long, and Podhoretz of the new year and our merry band of gentlemen and gentile riff on a wide variety of topics for you. This week: funiculars, Al Gore sells to Al-Jazeera, just where are Obama's women cabinet officers, lower standards for Mount Rushmore, Chuck Hagel, Downton Abbey, the Oscars, Game of Thrones, the Oscars and Lincoln, and yes, trillion dollar coins and John's out of the box idea for solving the debt crisis.

EJHill is the Milton Friedman of Photoshoppers.

Thanks for the laughs on the run tonight, gentlemen.  It was cold (32 degrees), dark, there's ice on the sidewalks and the roads, and I had a light strapped to my head.  These GLoPodCasts make the runs go by faster, and probably scare anyone else out going for a walk - when I burst out laughing.

Or disagree loudly.

Douglas: I heard the guys praise Downton Abbey, but I just heard an interview with an actor on the show where he describes that world as awful and how glad he is the society has progressed. Even money says the plot ends up agreeing with him.

On the other hand, the writer is a convinced Thatcherite.

Bill Clinton as Father of the Year?!!!?  My reaction, too, but Rabbi Schmuley Boteach has a different take.  "A man can be an imperfect husband and still be a great Dad", e.g., Joseph Kennedy, who though  "an awful, philandering husband who humiliated his wife with endless affairs, ... was extremely attached to his kids."

As for Bent Willie:

A few months ago … at a lecture … moderated by Chelsea Clinton, … Bill Clinton came in and sat in the seat right in front of me. His daughter was on stage and he wanted to see her. He arrived very quietly and was clearly there to show his daughter support. Then, this past Summer,Clinton toured …Rwanda, for his Clinton Global Initiative. In so many of the pictures he is walking around with one hand on his daughter’s shoulder. Not even his biggest critics deny that he is a loving and involved father who has given his daughter great confidence in herself as a woman, even as he has, most assuredly, caused her pain by acts of unfaithfulness that hurt her mother...
