Tornados and 18 Wheelers
For those of you wondering what happens when tornados meet 18 wheelers, look at what this one did today to my company's truck terminal in Dallas, TX just a few hours ago. The higher-ups say they are still doing an assessment and will let us know about damage and injuries. I've spent many a night in this lot and my prayers are with my colleagues there. Now, I've been known to ride out a tornado warning or two in my truck, a practice I herewith suspend. You have to see this to believe it.

Re: Tornados and 18 Wheelers
From what I've heard, 23 tornadoes throughout the Metroplex and only five injuries. Those injuries happening at a school in Forney.

That is just stunning. It's a reminder that Mother Nature will always be in charge of the planet.

Re: Tornados and 18 Wheelers
Yeowch! I've worked in the trucking biz (on the tech side) for 27 years and spent much of last year working with a client in Dallas. As a matter of fact, I "celebrated" my 25th wedding anniversary with my wife by begging off the phone and going to the hotel stairwell because tornado sirens were blaring.
I guess I should complain less about the rain in Portland.

Oh, and I just can't resist. Is this what the esteemed Ricochet member had in mind when he chose the nickname of "flownover" in here?

Re: Tornados and 18 Wheelers
Actually being the victim of anything weather related is just dumb luck; Dave. Your truck could be swallowed just as easy in a flood back home. I will, however, swear to the exact opposite to your employers if you need a day off though.
We get some spectacular weather around here and most folks are so used to it by now they know there's no telling what's coming from where and how bad until you go out to clean it all up. You can't stop it to save your life or dodge it anyway.
The Lord helps those who help themselves around here and it doesn't hurt to help your neighbor since it could be your turn next time.
Thank you however, for your concern; no one seems shed too many tears when Texas decides to eat her residents. Luckily we're too damned stubbborn to digest.

Dave
I just flew out of Dallas/Ft Worth @ noon today on my way to LAX. We had to sit on the runway apron waiting our turn since ATC was maintaining large separation between the flights to help thread them through the incoming storms. Real freaky standing in the rental car center in LA and watching on TV what we just flew through, and just missed the closing of the airport. I would hate to be stuck in a metal tube designed to be lifted by "winds" in an open area with a tornado in the area.

Glad you made it safely. What few photos I've seen of the DFW area today looked like something out of a Cecil B. DeMille film. I can't imagine riding that out in an aircraft. More correctly, I can't imagine riding that out in an aircraft while sober.

I'll keep your offer in mind. And about that Texas stubbornness? That's what I like about the place! It makes up for the teeny tiny interstate on-ramps.

Re: Tornados and 18 Wheelers
It's funny how seeing something like this makes us all feel like jerks for ever having said things like "Oh I wish it wasn't raining, I wanted to go fishing today..." or " I was hoping to work on my tan, stupid clouds."

Now, consider that these shots were captured from a freakin' helicopter.
The pilot must be crazy.

Re: Tornados and 18 Wheelers
Dave, I can relate to your renewed respect. My wife had seen a tornado live and in color growing up in KC, so I deferred to her wisdom when we moved to the Midwest. Sure enough, I dutifully shepherded the family into our shelter during the first warning. I must admit, however, I was somewhat sanguine (see D.B. Little above).
I was sanguine...until I saw the maple in my neighbor's yard with the crown snapped off, the oak up the street uprooted and across the street, etc., etc. More than happy to hit the shelter now!

Re: Tornados and 18 Wheelers
Dave, thanks for reminding us to think of those affected by today's storms as more than just arresting video. As someone who dodged the worst of the storms this afternoon, I consider myself fortunate that my family, each of us in separate places in Dallas and Collin counties during the work day, are all safe. This kind of thing also helps remind us why our property insurance rates are the highest in the nation.

Re: Tornados and 18 Wheelers
My daughter and her new husband are in the Ft. Worth area too. I was a little on edge when I couldn't get a hold of her earlier today during what seemed to be the worst of it and was relieved when she finally called me back and all was well.

Re: Tornados and 18 Wheelers
Fricosis Guy: I was less than sanguine when I had to clean up five huge supersatured oaks and burn them in my yard afterwards, but one of them did just miss my house. After that you realize there's not much you can do about it. I love to go out and watch it. Makes a great show. But if you're dumb enough to live here, you should learn to just blow it off.
And as for Dave: none of my ancestors would not have survived here had they not been made out of leather.
The highway system, however, I do apologize for, the Feds backdoored their way in and we haven't had good long on-ramp around here in decade or so. Of course, it could be worse; my grandpa drove a truck to carry scrap iron from Kilgore to Beaumont and back before there was even a hint of an interstate.
And it's morning now. Hope the rest of you are all right.

Re: Tornados and 18 Wheelers
My thoughts and prayers to those in the path, and hopes that none of our Ricochet friends were severely affected. I have some recent experience with this. I will tell you, watching videos like this is a little different now.
Be safe, and be well.

I hope and pray no one was injured at your headquarters, Dave.
