"Top Gun" -- the Chinese Version
So, a few days ago, China television broadcast some compelling footage of a Chinese air force training exercise. (Because, you know, they're getting stronger all the time....and they'd like everyone to know that.)
CCTV, the centrally-commanded television network, aired the footage of a fighter jet firing an air-to-air missile.
Just one problem. The footage looked...familiar. From Gizmodo:
But an internet commenter quickly pointed out that the aircraft the J-10 was shown shooting down was an F-5, an American aircraft, and the very one Tom Cruise guns down in a scene from Top Gun. Comparing frames from the CCTV broadcast (left) and Top Gun (right), well, they're lookin' pretty much identical.
See for yourself. CCTV's screenshots on the left. "Top Gun" on the right.
Those Chinese have never respected our copyright laws. So, how long will whoever put this shot-by-shot comparison going to stay out of prison?
And what's next? Will the Chinese military invent a big iron suit with a glowing central heart?

Re: "Top Gun" -- the Chinese Version
Well, I'd rather them rip off some movies than for them to actually have a functional stealth fighter that blows us up.

Re: "Top Gun" -- the Chinese Version
This not only illustrates the adroitness of the internet ("But an internet commenter quickly pointed out..."), but also why tyrannical regimes always seek to control it completely if they can.
Isn't this the same sort of thing that, at least in part, brought about the dissolution of the Soviet Union? Through quick and easy communication with the West, the Soviet masses discovered as fact that their lives were much worse off than the Regime was telling them.

I wouldn't laugh. I think they are demonstrating that they will soon be trading in the US debt they own for Our Military. Maybe We could talk them into a Kenny Loggins CD instead?

They will photoshop Jackie Chan's face over Robert Downey, Jr.'s.

I hope. Of course, the Uyghurs in the western provinces might get the news from Egypt and Tunisia and think about breaking off into their own Muslim nation. They tried a year or so ago, but you never know....
