"Top Chef" Becomes a Metaphor for the Entire Obama Presidency
From Politico:
First lady Michelle Obama was in Dallas Friday to judge a Top Chef cooking competition as part of her three-day Let's Move national tour. Obama joined White House chef Sam Kass and "Top Chef" host Tom Colicchio as judges in a televised competition that paired child sous-chefs with professional chefs.
... At the end of the 30 minute competition, the three chefs-student teams produced whole wheat turkey tacos, homemade applesauce and an arugula, carrot and avocado salad. The three judges were unable to declare a winner, declaring that all three teams won.
No one loses. Everyone gets arugula. I'm in hell.

C. U. Douglas
Doug Kimball: In the Dave Barry book made movie "Big Trouble," Stanley Tucci plays a mob accountant with sticky fingers. During his attempted hit, he falls to the ground and gets a faceful of halucinogenic giant toad venom. When he looks up at the family dog, the dog's face is the face of Martha Stewart. Instead of barking, the dog says, in Stewart's voice, "Arugula, arugula."

Nothing like a movie about putting bombs on airplanes scheduled to come out the Friday after 911. Ouch.

Flour tortillas, to the best of my recollection, are used for burritos, chimichangas and quesadillas.

.Each taco consists of two soft warm rolled tortillas filled with pulled lamb only. Served with a veggie sparse consume on the side. Then there is the seasoned chicken or rabbit wrapped in cactus and baked in a pit.
True Mexican food, not the ghastly imitations served in the States.

Pachuca, the capitol of the state of Hidalgo, Mexico. Not much in the line of American style quisine ever made it this far South. A lot of natural healthy options as matter of course and not a Whole Foods store in the country.
Go figure.

Is "veggie sparse consume" Real Mexican for a clear vegetable broth?

Re: "Top Chef" Becomes a Metaphor for the Entire Obama Presidency
Whole Foods. The stores are beautiful but the merchandise is dear.
By the way, whole wheat pasta is awful. So is whole wheat Italian bread. And as for whole wheat cereal, I prefer the cardboard box.
Now if Michelle spent a Saturday at Costco grazing among the various samples, that would be my speed.
"This Coastal Cheddar goes very nicely with the garlic flatbread. "
"Chicken nugget shaped like a dinosaur? Sure. I'll wash it down with this pomegranate juice."
"Nothing like brownies with baklava. I'll take a pass on the soy milk, thank you."

Real tacos around here are of the soft tortilla, blue corn variety.

The (legal) Mexican immigrants that worked on our farm growing up never gave me anything like that. Lots of tamales, but never blue corn anything, lamb, or rabbit. · 31 minutes ago
In some terms, foodstuffs are a regional thing, nothing new there. At one time when in the States, an immigrant mother and daughter from Guatemala decided to cook up some tamales the old way.
From Masa flour to the corn husk wrapped delight on the plate required nearly a full day of effort. Respect that I do.

Have to add this, when womenfolk get to cooking in the manner mentioned above. A man should never poke his nose in the kitchen. It matters not how much you believe in the Lord, He aint gonna save you...Heh,Heh..

Eating arugula is not my definition of hell, but the image of Michelle Obama wagging her finger in my face most definitely is.

Had been reminded of late that most Americans have a Disney view of the world and carry those expectations with them to a flaw.
Respect for a given culture and its offerings is an imperative. On the flip side, Haggis or fetus of unborn goat will not grace ones plate anytime soon.
The goat thing is seen as a delicacy here, not figured that one out as yet.

Okay, full disclosure: I like arugula. And I love applesauce. But "whole wheat turkey tacos" sound so joyless and undelicious. It doesn't sound like a meal. It sounds like homework.

Wilber Forge: Huh I did not realize that lamb was a staple meat any where in Mexico. Those tacos sound really tasty. I personally make pork tacos for my self, and use corn tortillas. I always like to have some avocado and cabbage in my tacos too and serve them with a salsa verde.
I haven't been to mexico to try authentic mexican food yet, but hey. Food is what you make of it. In the end it just has to taste good..and what makes food taste good is using good ingredients and taking the time to cook it properly.

I bet it was ground turkey too...I can't get over my dislike of ground poultry, or using it as a beef or pork substitute. Actually the whole healthy food that looks like unhealthy food trend disturbs me. I mean bacon is not healthy if eaten in large quantaties daily...so if you want to be healthy don't eat a lot of bacon. Don't weasel your way though with turkey bacon (and say it is just as good) or soy bacon. Just accept the fact you can't have bacon...

Whenever MO starts yakking about what I should eat, it's all I can do to not run down to the supermarket and buy the biggest box of gourmet double chocolate cookies I can find. She is the easy winner of my "Most Annoying FLOTUS in History" award, blowing away the second place finisher, Eleanor Roosevelt.

Taco's vary widely throughout Mexico, but I have never seen a flour tortilla except in wannabe AmeriMex phonies. Tacos are soft corn tortillas filled with whatever the locals best prefer.
Around Mexico City the Tacos al Pastor are similar to a Gyro. A concoction of lamb, Beef, and pork on a vertical stick with a gas cooking flame.
Tacos de Ojo, which I tricked my wife, Linda into eating, are made from cow eyes. Tasty... not.
Seafood, primarily shrimp tacos, are popular in the Mazatlan area. The beat goes on and on. Think of a sandwich made with a corn tortilla and and any local favorite filling.
The taco shell and the flour tortilla are strictly NorteAmericano. Another invention of the fast food biz.
In Mexico every meal can be an adventure. As for lamb, as with the Middle East, lamb is usually actually goat, and in Mexico it is Chiva, aka; goat.
I truly love the food in Mexico. The best time of day is 5am, walking down the street to the tortillaria, picking up a kilo of fresh tortillas, going home and making some Guacamole, and chorizo and eggs. Ahhhhh!, I'm back in paradise.

Appears to be seasoned broth with gabanzo beans. Usually add the meat from a taco, diced onions and celantro that comes with. Tasty stuff.

My apologies to Diane. She was the one who replied to my email to BSA and helped me out. BTW, for anyone wishing to capture a single photo from the Web, it first has to be put on your desktop, then to the comment section --as opposed to putting it directly into a computer file and then attempting to upload it to the comment section. Or was I the only one who didn't know this?
