Senators Patty Murray, Max Baucus, and John Kerry, the Democrats Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid has appointed to the new deficit panel, have a piece in today's Wall Street Journal entitled "Together We Can Beat the Deficit."

baucus

This is writing? This is thinking?

This is hilarious.

Excerpts:

Our country has long been a beacon of light in the world because the American people always come together when times are tough....This is not going to be an easy task....Make no mistake, this is an

kerry

important moment for our country....We know it may seem like the problems we face are intractable....This moment demands leadership, but it also demands consensus....[We need a plan] with the shared sacrifices this moment requires. One that moves past the partisan rancor...and allows us to continue shining bright in the world in this generation and for generations to come.

If Murray, Baucus and Kerry could get someone to pay them a nickel per cliche--Ben Bernanke, perhaps?--they could balance the budget in a week.

The picture of Kerry is a Code of Conduct violation.

Nicely stated.  If I'd turned in a speech draft in the Reagan White House that had contained such a dreary and endless string of cliches I'd have been fired.

I'm actually pleasantly surprised. I have come to expect much less from my senator (Murray).

Highlight this one, Peter: "But we were around in the 1990s when Democrats and Republicans came together to balance the budget and put us on the path to eliminating our national debt."

It should read, "We were around in the 1990's when we took one trillion dollars of Social Security surpluses, paid for a ton of other stuff, and told you we had a budget surplus."

I have long been trying to explain this latter fact to people I know.  The surplus has long been accepted as fact, when it was really just accounting fiction.

The fact that these three have been placed on the "Super" committee quickly revealed to me that Democrats are in no ways serious about changing the direction we are going.

"So we are ready to get to work with our colleagues on both sides of the aisle to report out a balanced plan..."

Sounds like they've already decided how to reduce the deficit. Who'da thunk it! Those "no" votes, which I didn't agree with at the time (two short weeks ago), are looking better every day.

Thanks to the NEA, that is now the quality of the electable. These people spent our Social Security Trust Fund on cowboy poetry.

What fun!  I'm a staunch proponent of shared sacrifices, leadership, consensus, partisan comity and unicorns.  Unicorns; cute little guys what with that pointy thing. Was Senator Kerry in the military?

They need just one more Democrat Senator and they can take their revival of The Firesign Theater on the road!

These three clowns don't have a boss who can fire them -- except once every six years.

I'm shocked.  Shocked to see that you guys can't discern the nuanced strategy of the Gang of Three in this clever  substitution of a Saturday Night Live script for public discussion.  And you fell for it!  Tsk, tsk, and heh.

During the debt ceiling debates I came up with an analogy that may or may not illustrate the issue here.  That analogy is chocolate milk.  And we act as if the argument is how much chocolate to put in the milk.  That is the way the media reports it, and that is the way the Democrats talk it up.  "We want more chocolate in the milk, and those buzz kill Republicans, due to 'partisan rancor', don't want you to have any chocolate in the milk."  And since so many of us get our milk from the government, we agree.  But as any real conservative knows, the more chocolate in the milk, the worse things get.  In fact, we aren't arguing over how much chocolate we want in the milk.  We are arguing over whether we want chocolate milk or water.  Water is a necessity, everyone has to have it; chocolate milk is a luxury and having too much is bad for you.  We conservatives recognize that there is a necessary and reasonable function for government.  The better we highlight the differences between liberal and conservative ideology, the better our chances of winning politically, I think.
