This week I have been presenting music and making connections to certain aspects of my year with Ricochet, for which I am quite grateful.  I was first drawn to the site based on its self description of being a conversation unfolding all the time.  This has never ceased being the best description for what takes place.  However, the true joy has been found in the private conversations that I have had the chance to partake in with members.  Today's post is to commemorate and give thanks for one particular conversation that took place about a month or so ago.  Two would-be writers sharing with each other the projects that currently occupy their imagination.  Two strangers, initially connected only by their membership to Ricochet, finding friendship via the surprising discovery of a shared passion.

Today's video features the project I shared with him.  If you enjoy it a fraction of the amount he said he did, I will be a very proud man.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Very nice.  (And really tone-perfect on the song, too.)

Mollie Hemingway, Ed.

Just watched this with my 4-year-old and she asked to watch it again. That has to be a good sign!

What's not to like? Totally awesome, amigo. Autobiographical I assume? Are you the illustrator? Who is the singer-songwriter and what's the name of the tune?

I am so glad you stuck with us soldier! Carry on. Semper fi!

Good Berean Autobiographical I assume?

Ha!  I wish.  Basically I stumbled upon the design early on in my sketching, and let it evolve from there.  Here is an excerpt from my notes.

Paddling out past the waves is the first skill you have to master if you want to surf.   It’s a lot of work and can sometimes be pretty hard to do.   And once you are out there, you need to learn to to sit and balance on your board as it rocks to and fro, side to side.

If you cannot paddle out, and cannot balance while you wait, you cannot surf.

One morning when I  was out on the water with my Daddy, he asked me an interesting question.

“Do you know the secret of the Great Lone Star Swell”

I thought for a moment and replied.

“No, sir,”

“Well, first, Mother Nature is a Texan, “ he said,  looking  back over his shoulder and the horizon beyond that.

“Second, she has these magical butterflies.”,  he said with a big grin on his face. He leaned forward onto his board and started digging into the water with both hands.

“And third?”

“She loves to surf.”

Couple more quick thoughts on that post above... the book is largely being written for my oldest girl, Mary Jane.  I wanted to launch a brand of surfer clothes for young girls in Texas.  Like the old brands I grew up on, OP, Town & Country, Quiksilver and the like.  The design for the logo just begged for a back story.  And as a stay at home dad with Mary Jane at the moment, doing the illustrations at the kitchen table with Mary Jane at my side, coloring away on her own stuff, has been time more than well spent.

The story is blocked out, and I intend to sit down to finish it after the holidays.  It needs time to percolate at the moment.

But at its core its about a little girl who surfs, and her daddy who teaches her to do so.

Thanks for the good words, Good Berean.  They are appreciated now as much as they were then.

Regarding the music...it's by The Wandering Bears out of Iowa City, Iowa.  They actually reached out to me to introduce themselves.  They found me and our Song of the Day posts back when we did a week review on the music from Minnesota. and thought I was a music blogger from the Twin Cities and invited me to a show.  I really like their album and thought this song worked perfect for the preview.

Happy Thanksgiving, and if I am allowed to say so in return, Semper Fi.
