Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody had a country album itch that he was feeling more and more compelled to scratch.  It seems that his Snow Patrol buddies were delighted when he formed up with REM's Peter Buck and other notables from the Portland, OR music scene to scratch that itch and put together an album that ended up featuring "country tinged" music and served as a love letter of sorts to America.  Among the notables on the album are Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward of She and Him.  Its Zooey who carries the female vocals on the album version of this tune, but its the amazing Lisa Hannigan who does the honors in this live performance, the band's debut.  One commenter on YouTube pointed out the way that Gary and Lisa glance at each other as the song kicks off.  Apparently they had been dating for a while before this, though not at the time of the show, and their chemistry continued to bleed out.  I selected the video I did because its perspective includes Peter Buck and the others.  However, if you want to focus on the singers, check out this one from an alternate angle.  And Enjoy.

I love the line: "Kiss like a fight that neither wins." Good find.

Zooey Deschanel has a beautiful voice. In the movie Elf was the first I heard it, and it really stopped me. But you were right to pick the live version of this song with Lisa Hannigan.

I agree with you about Zooey (the newly single Zooey)

Lisa Hannigan is Damien Rice's better half on much of his work.  Check out this hidden track on his album O.  It's of her singing Silent Night, but with some alternative lyrics.

Mollie Hemingway, Ed.

I like Zooey Deschanel and thought her performance of the National Anthem before one of this year's World Series games was one of the finest I've ever heard. But I prefer the Hannigan version of this song.
