Pretty Ironic that you post this because I just heard the title track to their new record which sounds very promising. Always liked these guys.

Hey Lance!
I told you a while back about my daughter's a cappella group competing for the national title in NYC. Well, the competition was last night, the group is Soul'd Out from Wilsonville HS in Wilsonville, Oregon. They may not have won it all, but judging from my daughter's reaction on the phone last night, they were pretty darned pleased with the results (link below)
Oh, and the young man who won best arrangement from our group on Knights of Cydonia... take a listen to the song and imagine using voices to do the guitar and trumpet leads (other link below by Muse).
Signed, The Excited Dad!

Hey, Mr. Adventure.
I have been meaning to play some Muse. I remember the link you sent me before. In a strange way, the idea of it being sung a cappella makes sense even before you hear it. Its such dramatic music with great big highs and lows.
I have not been keeping up with Muse lately, especially since they made it big with their Twilight soundtrack connections. But their Absolution album is just brilliant. I am sure Aaron digs that with his affection for the big and loud.
I'll post them sometime for us all to enjoy, though I am sure we will get very few comments.
In honor of your daughter, I will post one I have been saving for you. I may have found another stumper for her. Strong female lead vocals on top of some really solid rock and roll. Much like the Joy Formidable.
My own daughter went pee pee in the potty today! Not quite the same as celebrating a concert performance, but I am sure they're both on the same macro highway of fatherly pride.

Looking forward to it Lance - and the first pee pee on the potty is definitely a milestone!
Just got off the phone with the two of them (wife & daughter). Another cool part is that they get to sing at the college level competition tonight at The Lincoln Center. Not too many kids from Oregon that get to say that.
I have another favorite that I've been meaning to suggest to you. John Ondrasik & Five For Fighting. I'm sure you're familiar - as probably everyone else is, but this is just an awesome, patriotic song:

I feel rather deficient that I've never heard of either artists. The "My Morning Jacket" video was outstanding! I'll search them out but any additional "inside" details on them would be appreciated. Appreciate the music, Lance. Oh, and I forgive the indiscretion of playing Stipes horrific version of "One" earlier this week. Mary J. Bilge's, however, brought tears to my eyes.

Ha! How wonderfully contrarian of you, Kenneth. I appreciate you lending your weight to the issue. Though I do take issue with the MTV comment, most of this would never be played on their regular rotation, were they even to have a regular rotation nowadays. I am honored you have found reason to opine and find it a refreshing counterweight to the mood of our fellow members who have similarly shared their thoughts. I have to admit, there are plenty of posts by Members, and Contributors, that don't speak to me or my general disposition, that I just ignore. And really, what could be ruder than ignoring someone.

Regarding John Prine, he is a singer-songwriter from back in the 70's. Turns out he used to be a mailman before Roger Ebert heard him at an open-mic session in Chicago and wrote the artist's first published review. I initially heard of him on the aforementioned tribute album, while I reserve my real discovery of his work for his wonderful cover of Clay Pigeons. Turthfully, it wasn't until just now that I learned it was a cover.
My Morning Jacket? They are one of the big acts on the current "indie"scene. Its sound is reminiscent of big 1970's rock. The MMJ album to dive into first would probably be the live CD and DVD, Okonokos, from which the posted "One Big Holiday", as well, as my other favorite, though far more mellow, Golden. Its lead, Jim James, released Tribute To in response to George Harrison's passing under the name Yim Yames. He is also a member of the Monsters of Folk "supergroup", a distinction he shares with one of my personal favorites, M. Ward.

I am familiar with them, and their Superman in particular, but must admit to missing that one you suggested, Note to an Unknown Soldier. I think that one should be given its own post, perhaps on Memorial Day.

Re: Today's Song of the Day: John Prine with Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket - "All The Best"
John Prine was recognized as one of America's best lyricists a few years ago by the the then Poet Laureate of the U.S., Ted Kooser at the Library of Congress. I listened to him a few times back in college (late '60s early '70s) but never paid too much attention to him.
A buddy of mine, a big Prine fan, reintroduced me to him after a 35 year absence and I would suggest that y'all get reintroduced as well. His simplicity of chords and picking masks a subtle brilliance in his musicality. Couple that with his lyrics where he can create a whole world in three or four verses of iambic pentameter, well, he makes for a great evening in concert if you can catch him.
Here's a link to the evening at the Library of Congress (Real Player plugin required). For those who aren't all that familiar with John Prine, I'd also suggest picking up, (did I really type that?) or downloading Fair and Square as a great place to start.
Lance - thanks for bringing Prine to Ricochet.

"The Way That He Sings" off of the At Dawn album remains one of my all time favorite tracks in the Indie rock music genre.

It is a very good track. They don't have that version readily aviable on YouTube, although here is a link to the iTunes listing, so I'll point everyone to the live Okonokos performance.
