Beirut, a man and his band performing a hybrid of Eastern European and Baltic folk and Western Pop, said hello to the world with a very well received album, Gulag Orkestar back in 2006.  They are about ready to do so again with their new album Riptide, scheduled for release Aug 30th. This is from that first album.

Another home run.  Best song since June Hymn by the Decemberist a few weeks ago.  In different ways.  This one is musically wonderful whereas June Hymn is Lyrically wonderful.  Kind of reminds me of something David Byrne would come up with but not as quirky.

Thanks for keeping it up, I would never have heard this song in a million years without your post.

Ross, thanks so much for the particularly timely comment.  I love hearing which songs particularly resonate.  Obviously, they all resonate with me.  Otherwise I wouldn't post them.  Even hearing when they don't, like I heard via the Wilco post the other day, is very gratifying.  I don't expect people to comment every day, but when they do, I really appreciate it.

This song was a late edition to the mid-summer playlist I am putting together.  I will share the list when its complete.

BTW, I dare you to try to keep time with the conga drum.  It is working on something other than a normal rhythm.

Oh and one other thing regarding Wilco.  You put up the song from Billy Bragg/Wilco a while back which was great, but California Stars from the same album (sung by Wilco rather than Bragg) would be a great choice also.

Mollie Hemingway, Ed.

I'd like a compilation of all of these songs. You haven't set up any playlists we could steal, have you?

Great song, thanks for that.  I love that Eastern-European Folk-Rock is becoming a genre unto itself.  High-fives for humanity.

Love the instrumentation of this song.  Home run today.  That Wilco song still sucks.

That song was going to originally represent that era during my weeklong review.  I agree that its a good tune.  I may revisit that album down the road again in order to showcase the Natalie Merchant sung diddy, Birds and Ships...a total gem.

You are now my new favorite bench mark.
