'Tis Crazy! Parcells Didn't Make It.
The NFL Hall of Fame results are in. Curtis Martin, Chris Doleman, Cortez Kennedy, Willie Roaf, Dermontti Dawson, and Jack Butler made it.
Bill Parcells, Cris Carter, and Jerome Bettis got stiff-armed! Thoughts?
I wholeheartedly agree with everything that CBS Sports blogger Mike Freeman, a New York Times football writer when I knew him years ago, says here:
The two greatest motivators in NFL history, the coaches who got players to do things and go places in their careers they thought they never could, were Don Shula and Parcells. The best pure motivators ever. Period. That is a coach's primary job. Nothing happens before that -- not the Xs and Os, nothing -- before getting a player mentally ready. Shula was the best at that (what he did in Miami with the then expansion Dolphins is borderline miraculous) and Parcells was second.
He turned around the Giants, the Patriots, and Jets when those latter two organizations were absolutely awful.
Freeman wonders if a writers' vendetta may be at work. (Parcells wasn't too warm and fuzzy with the scribes.) Others, Freeman says, claim that Parcells was nuthin' without Belichick by his side. I stand with Freeman, who says he's "stunned."
I am thrilled for Curtis Martin. A first class fellow. This story, about his relationship with his father, proves it.

I think it was Big Tuna's association with The Cowboys that tainted Him.

As a Buffalo Bills fan, I have come to expect my guys to be ignored even in Hall of Fame complaint threads.

Re: 'Tis Crazy! Parcells Didn't Make It.
Parcells should have gotten in purely on the awesomeness of the nickname "Big Tuna".

Re: 'Tis Crazy! Parcells Didn't Make It.
Parcells should be in, so should at least one of the three receivers: Carter, Reed, and Tim Brown.
My pick would be Brown, though it's a really tough call among all three.

The 44 selectors for the Hall frequently pass by coaches due the very few players allowed. Look at those three great wide outs watching again.

Bill Parcells, because he was the only coach in the NFL capable of handling Lawrence Taylor and I quote Michael Lewis here:
Parcells believed Taylor's greatness was an act of will, a refusal to allow the world to understand him as anything less than great.

Re: 'Tis Crazy! Parcells Didn't Make It.
It's a straight numbers game with the Hall capping the number of inductees. Most of them will probably make it. The headscratchers are guys like Jerry Kramer who wind up on All-Decade teams released by the NFL itself who still can't sniff the Hall.

Both Bettis and Carter deserve it. Parcells will definitely be in at some point.

Re: 'Tis Crazy! Parcells Didn't Make It.
That makes sense Doc. I really can't make a case against any of the inductees... even the Viqueen.
Awfully good year for linemen.

Re: 'Tis Crazy! Parcells Didn't Make It.
It is absolutely correct that writers use these votes to exercise their personal vendettas. They also tend to push the big coastal cities, so the fact that Giant legend Parcells was stiffed is a dead giveaway that his refusal to coddle the reporters is costing him.
Cris Carter has an interesting combination- in any other situation, he would be deified as a bad boy gone very good. He started with an agent violation costing him eligibility in college, then with drug addiction in the pros, after which he became an unabashed evangelical Christian and bugged reporters by sparring with them in interviews while still giving them fortune cookies with Scripture verses inside.
I'd be curious to know from Ursula if Carter's Christianity is a turn-off for sports reporters.
Re: 'Tis Crazy! Parcells Didn't Make It.
The Parcells snub is incredible. On Cris Carter -- big local fave here in MN -- you have Reed and Brown. Coming up fast are Moss and Owens, the 2 greats of the 2000s. The cap on number of inductees is going to force some people out, and at least one of Carter/Reed/Brown has to be one of those left out. And if Art Monk is out, hard to see Cris Carter's way in.

And this is, what, his third time up? For number of Super Bowl receptions he is exceeded only by Jerry Rice, and he has made 7.5 miles worth of receptions.
Being a conservative dealing with national media has nothing on being a Buffalo sports fan and having to do the same.

Bettis and Martin couldn't go in together. Now Bettis can go next time.
Aside from that, two Steelers, two Pitt Panthers, two other guys.

I listened to the NFL channel today and one of the 44 voters discussed all these topics. It is interesting how many Ricochet folks make similar points to professional analysts.

Art Monk was inducted in 2008.

Re: 'Tis Crazy! Parcells Didn't Make It.
Freeman talks motivators and puts Shula and Parcells ahead of Lombardi? Lombardi had freakin' Sonny freakin' Jurgensen, the potbellied playboy with an arm of gold and a bunch of passing records, running extra laps and leading calisthenics. He turned that ball club into a team in just one season. And, of course, his run on the Green Bay Packers requires no mention.
And, yes, Parcells' Cowboy years make one pause just as Gibbs' second stint with the Redskins would. But Gibbs waited until well after he was already in the Hall to come back.

Right on. I can see them in the same class... but obviously superior?
Try again.

Re: 'Tis Crazy! Parcells Didn't Make It.
With respect to Parcells and coaches in general, the voting writers like to be certain that the nominee is really out of the league (based upon interviews I heard during coverage for the Senior Bowl). With all of the coaching vacancies this year, Parcells' name is being bandied about (though teams have actually been selecting younger candidates). I suspect Parcells will make it in next year.

Re: 'Tis Crazy! Parcells Didn't Make It.
I think Parcell's problem is his relationship with teams after the Giants. He was undoubtedly successful everywhere he coached, particularly with young ascending teams that just need a bit extra to get over the hump. However, he also had a propensity to jump ship immediately when things started to look on the decline.
The Hall of Fame loves longevity and loyalty when making its selections. Most other HoF coaches remained with their teams through good times and bad. Nevertheless, Parcells will likely get in next year.
WR's traditionally have a hard time getting in. That's obviously not going to change anytime soon. Carter, Reed, and Brown will all probably make it in eventually. Just wait until TO and Moss come up for selection, however. Between the inflated stats of their era and their major character issues, it will be an interesting to see if either makes it in.

Re: 'Tis Crazy! Parcells Didn't Make It.
I was shocked not to see Parcells get in. Parcells is who Central Casting sends when you call for the football coach. He'll get in soon, because the backlash people hear now will motivate the voters next year.
I really don't have any problem with the guys they did pick. I actually like the idea that Dermonti Dawson and Willie Roaf got in before a wide receiver, because they were superior at positions that (unfairly) don't get a lot of attention. I think it shows that the real football voters appreciate things that the media and casual fans overlook.
