It's been a long day, and my file folder labeled "Deeper Meaning and Serious Implications" is just plain empty.  Will the Ricochetoise supply my lack?  Take a look at this, and then, if you're so moved, try writing something--about the continued vitality of American technology, perhaps, or about the military applications to which such robots might eventually lead (this video can't look good to the bad guys monitoring YouTube in Teheran or Pyongyang).

Or maybe, if you're in the mood I'm in just now, you'll just want to grin--and send the link to a couple of friends.

I will grin and post it on my Facebook page and tell everyone it is my son's science project.

Peter, you should look at this, too:

To me, it's a bit spooky.  It reminds me of Stanislaw Lem's 1973 science fiction novel The Invincible, in which men from Earth discover a world that has been completely depopulated except for swarms of nanobots...

I agree.  It's all sort of spooky.  (But at the same time, I just love it.  The fun we'd have had in high school if these things had been around then!)

Hey, no one's stopping you from having fun with them right now!  The quadrotors seem rather expensive, but I got one of these recently.  I'm waiting until the summer to try it out.

Toys!  That's the application.  (Why didn't I think of that?)

Assuming the mullahs can manipulate fly swatters, their nuclear facilities look to be safe. Hopefully Bibi's got his techies working on some larger critters.

Perfect.

Along with all the other things I already have to do, I now have to start training to shoot tiny and fast flying objects.

Many clay pigeons will be harmed because of this video, mark my words.

Neat as hell though.

This video looks fantastic to America's enemies (not to mention the enemies of individual privacy) because the technology is available to anybody that can afford an Arduino microprocessor, can follow simple electronics schematics, and can copy & paste Python scripts.

Seriously, the story here isn't that American tech and ingenuity borders on magic. The story here is that robotics and miniature aviation has become freakishly inexpensive and accessible to just about anybody.

Here's RoboKopter from Occupy Poland.

Still think the bad guys can't figure this stuff out?

If you want to see truly mind-boggling robotics, take a look at Honda and Toyota's robotics divisions.

(Psst: Those two are not American companies. Ford's robot sucks. It's feet are anchored to the floor. It's no better than a Disney animatronic bear.)

There are lots of tips on Instructables.com for modding these mini-copters. Mostly tips for reducing weight so the battery will last longer.

Interesting you should bring this up Mr. Robinson, robotics are very much in my thoughts recently. Consider these other two projects DARPA is funding:

Mulling over these efforts I was forcibly struck by the thought that this will have significant effects on our democracy, on all democracies. What happens when the point arrives where it is no longer necessary to persuade, cajole or hire individuals to accomplish some goal but one can have a legion of tireless machines accomplish it for you? Is this not the dream of every dictator? Servants that never complain, never dissent and perform exactly as you instruct even unto their complete destruction?

By the way, the above quadrorotor clip is an excerpt from a longer TED talk presentation on these devices. The entire presentation is quite fascinating.

After watching a tonne of robot videos on YouTube, methinks the biggest obstacle to their military application is the noise they make.

Robot soldiers gotta be quiet.
