Tina Fey vs. Taxpayers
Just in case we needed a reminder, here's what the other side thinks of us. It's also, I think, an attempt at humor by Tina Fey, who just received the Kennedy Center's Mark Twain prize for humor. This was part of her acceptance speech:
And, you know, politics aside, the success of Sarah Palin and women like her is good for all women - except, of course --those who will end up, you know, like, paying for their own rape 'kit 'n' stuff. But for everybody else, it's a win-win. Unless you're a gay woman who wants to marry your partner of 20 years - whatever. But for most women, the success of conservative women is good for all of us. Unless you believe in evolution. You know - actually, I take it back. The whole thing's a disaster."
Interestingly, PBS cut out this part of her quote for the televised version of the affair.
"It was not a political decision," responded Peter Kaminsky, one of the broadcast's executive producers. "We had zero problems with anything she said."
Well, of course. They love everything she does and says! However, the Kennedy Center receives state and federal tax dollars. So does PBS. When will taxpayers get a say in what kinds of garbage our money supports?

Just to add ... I suspect all conservative women -- and perhaps women everywhere! -- would, if we had to choose, give the federal funding for rape kits instead of for the Kennedy Center's capital improvements.

Tina Fey can be very funny when she's not talking politics. It's a shame to see talent squandered in bitterness.
Re: Tina Fey vs. Taxpayers
Seriously, Aaron--Fey should not quit her day job.

I cringed when I read that this morning. I think Tina Fey is very funny and I also thought her teasing of Sarah Palin was spot on and all perfectly fair game stuff. Likewise I think the Alex Baldwin as Rockefeller Republican stuff is all quite good.
I just wish the SNL school could tease and poke fun at the other side with equally incisive derision. They come close when they mock David Patterson, and they did so the famous send-up of Democratic party donors, so I know they have it in them -- but sadly their heart just isn't in it.

As usual, Trace, I completely agree. There's rich, comedic material to mine on both sides, but the vitriol is only directed in one direction.

Re: Tina Fey vs. Taxpayers
Was it Palin, exercising her despotic authority, who made it illegal for that gay woman to marry her partner of 20 years? Did I miss something? I was under the impression that the American people had demanded that result every single time it has been put to a vote. Now you tell me, who is the real object of Fey's derision? Statements like this make it obvious that Fey uses Palin (a person who has no actual control over the lives of others) as a proxy for the group she sees as the real enemy of "progress": those unenlightened masses in flyover country who are too simple to recognize their own ignorance and bigotry. To people like Fey, Palin's unforgivable sin is that she takes those unwashed rubes seriously - even considers herself one of them - rather than dictating down to them as any truly visionary, progressive leader should.

But she is clinging to her "religion."

Chris Christie issued 130 lay-off notices today - the entire staff of NJN, the state run television and radio network! Bye Bye, state run media!

How awesome is Chris Christie? My awesome meter only goes so high. Does anyone have a bigger awesomeness meter so I can tell just how awesome he really is?

Re: Tina Fey vs. Taxpayers
In my experience, the closer the relationship between two people, the more frequently and more fiercely they tease each other. But, even if Fey and Palin were close friends, different rules apply when mocking someone in front of millions of strangers. I have no problem with comedians gently ribbing people on national TV. But too many such impressions are mean-spirited and performed without a sense of satire.
I enjoyed (overall) the first couple seasons of 30 Rock. Baldwin played a great mock-conservative. Fey did occasionally poke fun at herself as a bleeding-heart liberal. The series seemed to become meaner and more politically focused over time, though.

I think because Sarah Palin wore red, as did SNL regular Jon Lovitz many years ago, Tina believes that Sarah Palin is really Satan.

Mark Twain is, you know, like, rolling over in his grave and stuff. Actually, I take that back. He is actually rising from his grave and, like the Ghost of Humor Past, he is going to visit the Mark Twain Prize judges, tell humorous stories, blow cigar smoke in their faces, and tickle them till they die laughing.

Rob Long has more insight on this than most when it comes to Hollywood libs, but I suspect he is tired of it all.
It's one big snarky sneer from Tina Fey with Palin. I am not a big Palin fan, but I just find it so nasty of women on the left that rather than understand their sisters on the right they sneer at them.
Recall that Jodie Foster movie where she played the lower class girl that was raped in the pool hall. A champion of that woman and her situation, but in any way do you think Jodie Foster or Tina Fey have any time for the millions of women who don't get raped in country bars, ride with their men in pick-ups, and in general like Sarah Palin.....
