How did Romney do against the score sheet I laid down several days ago:

  • Challenge the Obama narrative: Very good start.  He knew the details.  He set the context for his economic plan, explaining the role of small business, of tax rates, of growth in closing the deficit (in this he had a fresh and effective way of laying out the case).  Best explanation ever on Medicare.
  • Good soundbites: "Trickle down government" was one.  No knockout blow but very good.
  • Humor:  A little.  But he did something comparable.  He was as relaxed as we have ever seen him.  He smiled naturally.  And as easy as he appeared, he kept on the offensive.  Impressive.

An old fashioned stomping.  Medicare analysis was astounding.  He won some seniors.

Watching Romney tonight, I couldn't help but think about what might have been in 2008. To think McCain was the weaker one in his debates with O, after witnessing Obama's pathetic performance tonight (which I credit largely to Romney's getting under his skin from the get-go). Finally, we get to see a candidate walk and talk "presidential". I haven't seen a debate so one-sided since Reagan.

Romney didn't come out all Chuck Norris style, scissor kicking Obama across the stage, so that was a disappointment.  But I quickly got over it.

I thought the "Mr. President, I've been in business for 25 years and have no idea what you're talking about" (or similar) was a pretty good zinger. But a good show all around.

The Twitter comments are pleased to see Presidential quality. Good for Romney To get those details you mention. Also good to see Romney relaxed.

When Romney compared Obama to a little boy who lies over and over again to get out of an (implied) spanking, my husband and I both whooped. He (currently a registered Independent, never been a Republican) said, "Dad's home, America!"

Tonight also confirmed that Romney was our best choice out of the primary field.  he was relaxed, prepared and actually looked like he was enjoying himself.

And does that boy love numbers!

Let's just stop dancing around it and use the phrase we're all thinking, no matter how much it annoys Rob Long. He did what he needed to do.
