This Day in Hillsdale, Michigan

On a plane returning to California from Michigan, I find my connection too slow to permit much of a post. But I wanted to thank President Larry Arnn, Ricochet’s own Paul Rahe and Terence Moore, and all the good people of Hillsdale College for inviting me to participate in their celebration of Ronald Reagan’s centenary. Cloudless skies, cool breezes, and, here and there along the leafy streets, early blazes of gold and scarlet. And—this led me to ask a friend to snap an iPhone photo—one of the most beautiful nineteenth century court houses I’ve ever seen.

Fall in the Upper Midwest is, well, just fantastic. And if you can believe it, those gorgeous 19th-century courthouses are everywhere in Michigan!
Glad you had such a lovely visit.

Re: This Day in Hillsdale, Michigan
So true, but not quite everywhere. In Branch County, next door to Hillsdale County and the county I grew up in, the beloved old courthouse was torched by an arsonist years ago. That's a tragedy, but the real tragedy is that it was replaced by a hideous, cheap modernist box. It's just another example of how government's decline in competence has made the routine become the impossible.
(BTW, I attended parts of the conference at Hillsdale, my takes are here and here at the Member Feed.)

Thanks, Charlotte, and my visit really just couldn't have been any lovelier. As for you, Fredosphere, what a pleasure to learn that you really exist. I already knew you as the only man in cyberspace who uses an umlaut. Now I know you as a wonderfully articulate and charming musician and writer. A pleasure to meet you. (As to meet the other Ricochetians who attended the conference. But since they all write under pseudonyms, and since I'm not sure they want to be outed, I leave them unnamed.)
