I'm not sure how much it will help Perry, either, but check out this tough but entertaining hit on the former Massachusetts governor.

Tim Russett!

EDIT: I mean "Tim Russert!" (Darn these auto-correcting fingers of mine.)

Oh, right . . . the ad. I agree -- that's not really a Rick Perry ad, it's an anti-Romney ad, and it's certain to help Herman Cain!

And I don't know the agency that's creating these ads for Rick Perry, but they're fantastic! Herman Cain should hire them.

Perry either needs to get it together in this next debate, or go away and shut the ---- up.  For all Romney's faults, he does have virtues... obvious executive ability and skill, clear policy positions he can actually articulate concisely, and masterful foreign policy and military positions (see Jennifer Rubin's take on his speech & paper in the WaPo's Right Turn blog this last weekend).  Regaining our footing in the world and making the environment for economic growth more welcoming may be the most we can hope for from the next President.  Unfortunately, so far that potential President is not Rick Perry.  So, I reiterate, he either needs to step up and show himself capable of connecting more than two variables to make a clear and complex point without all the frat-boy cowboy body language, or he needs to shut his mouth and go back to Texas.  (If he does, subsequently, Romney needs to get his video staff... they're pretty good.)

The sound guy could use some mixing tips, but other than that it was an effective ad. Now if it was just for an effective candidate...

If Rick Perry wanted these to work for him, he needed to find someone else to throw the punch.  First rule of a multi-candidate race is that if you go negative on one of your opponents, both of you will suffer -- and a third candidate will benefit.  In this case DrewInWisconsin is correct: Herman Cain should send a thank you note to Rick Perry.

All of this is old news which most everyone is aware of.  Has anyone not heard that Romney has flip-flopped?  That's why I don't think it's going to rescue Perry.  He's going to have to stand on his own merits (assuming he as some).

This ad seems to me to be too fast, unless you already know the issues well.

This ad is designed to penetrate the skulls of the unengaged already predisposed to reject Obama. How many times do we hear Obama's voice say "I agree." All slick, not a moment wasted providing meaningful context. With the Internet, anyone looking for that has that and made up their own minds.

This could work for Perry. He is not out, but he is certainly down. The tea party is rallying behind Cain, not because of a deep faith in his ability to govern well, but because of his capacity to deliver a clear message.

If Perry does his homework between the last debate and Dartmouth I can see him coming right back into the running. It's a big if....but I'm giving him the most gracious benefit of the doubt I can muster.

Maybe deep down, I'm just hoping that Mitt starts polling as the #6 or #7 candidate in the field. Despite what you may think of the production quality, the ad hits home. Mitt Romney has yet to articulate an adequate response to the single issue that solidified conservative resistance to Obama, and without that, we are still left with the decision between a giant douche and a turd sandwich.

Have you guys seen Which Mitt?  Great stuff there.  It's done by the Democrats, but it's still pretty effective.  I wonder how they'll attack Herman Cain.

I agree that the message is effective, but the flow of message leaves much to be desired.  Romney aside, George W. Bush and Lyndon B. Johnson are two good reasons not to vote for another president from Texas.

Rick Perry and Mit Romney are politicians.  What this country needs is a president.  Neither Romney nor Perry are presidential timber.  And, neither were George W. or Lyndon Baines.

So that leaves...

The editing of the Russert interview was deliberately misleading.  Romney went on to tell Russert that he is a federalist who believes each state should decide for themselves on healthcare and there shouldn't be a national solution.

Perhaps Perry should put out an ad where he successfully strings a complete sentence together.  Nah, probably need too many takes...

This ad hurts both Romney and Perry in my eyes -- Romney for the obvious reasons, and Perry because he continues his pattern of selective editing. (Via Katrina Trinko on the Corner), the Romney campaign provides a fuller transcript:

RUSSERT: “Why, if it’s good for Massachusetts and it’s working in Massachusetts, wouldn’t you apply it to the rest of the country?”

ROMNEY: “I would.”

RUSSERT: “A mandate?”

ROMNEY: “No. Let me tell you what I would do, just exactly as I described. I like what we did in Massachusetts. I think it’s a great plan. But I’m a federalist. I don’t believe in applying what works in one state to all states if different states have different circumstances.” (NBC’s “Meet The Press,” 12/16/07)

I've just about given up on cutting Perry slack and hoping he'll emerge as the conservative alternative to Romney. I can forgive some poor performances, but he's revealing a lack of character that I can't overlook.

What a terrible hack job this was.  I can't believe anyone will be influenced by this; perhaps only in turning against Perry.
